The Akai Professional Timbre Wolf Analogue Synthesiser borrows the Bass Synth controls of its predecessor the Rhythm Wolf, and gives you a 4-voice polyphonic synthesiser set up that is simple awesome.
The Timbre Wolf features the same styling as the Rhythm Wolf and the Tom Cat, with a solid chassis and elegantly detailed side panels. Akai has gone to great care to ensure that the interface is visually intuitive, so that you can get to grips with everything in little to no time at all.
First of all you'll notice the professional-quality 25-key custom Akai keyboard, which guarantees a pleasantly responsive feel. Alongside the keyboard is a Mod Wheel for real-time pitch-shifting and modulation.
However, the brains of the operation lies above the keyboard, where you'll find the four individual voices that are divided into individual sections that are readily identifiable. Each voice has a range of controls that can be manipulated to change parameters to your heart's content.
There is a selection of different modes to choose from: Mono; Poly; Unison. Mono mode divides the voices into four independent bass synths. Poly mode allows you to play chords, and as you do, the synthesiser cycles through each independent voice as you play. Unison mode groups all the voices into one and plays them all simultaneously to create a huge, fat, lead sound. Each one of the voices can be independently adjusted to create purposely dissonant chords, change filters, etc. When you run the 32-step sequencer, not only will it run through each independent voice, but also you can change settings on the fly during performances.
The built-in "Howl" circuit generates a hefty amount of distortion, giving your tones a fantastically dirty edge.
The Timbre Wolf can easily hold its own during performances or in the studio, but most of all, it enjoys playing with others. There are separate outputs for each voice along the rear of the unit. Akai has equipped it with Gate Triggers (IN and OUT), as well as MIDI (IN, OUT and THRU) ports for triggering and syncing the Timbre Wolf with other sequencers (both vintage and modern), synths, whatever you like! There is even a USB output if you want to connect it directly to your laptop. If you already have a Rhythm Wolf and/or a Tom Cat, then pair it/them with one of these beauties.
The Akai Professional Timbre Wolf Analogue Synthesiser is finished to a very high standard, with a solid chassis to house the components and stylish wooden paneling along each side. This is an undeniably cool piece of kit that is perfect for hitting the road with, or taking pride of place in your studio set up.
