With the original Portaflex Series being conceived over 50 years ago and Ampeg’s being there at the birth of bass amplification, you know you’re going to be in for a treat here.
Portaflex – Vintage Meets Modern
With the vintage design of the series immediately apparent the Ampeg Portaflex PF-115HE Bass Cabinet already feels like a classic. What lies beneath the beautiful cabinetry however, is modern performance giving you 50 years of bass expertise in one loud box.
This is no slug, as the cabinet has been outfitted with a 15-inch ceramic Eminence LF driver, pushing that 450W RMS power handling (at 8 ohms) home, whilst caressing it with true Ampeg tone. This is further supported by the head amplifier’s 1-inch HF compression driver, which itself is equipped with an L-Pad level control comprised of three options: On, Off or at a -6dB padded level (for reducing treble level). It has also been rated as having a frequency response of 50 Hz - 17 kHz, and a sensitivity rating of 99.5 dB SPL at 1w/1m.
Controlled, Punchy Bass Sound
This amount of power makes the Ampeg Portaflex PF 115HE an excellent small venue, studio, or monitoring bass cabinet, as it has been designed to provide controlled lows, with a punchy tone and a decent amount of volume, rather than all-out earthquakes. If you want go bigger, however, you can. Two jack sockets, wired in parallel, at the rear of the cabinet means you can hook to an amplifier or daisy chain to another cabinet.
The enclosure of the Ampeg Portaflex PF115HE Bass Cabinet has been crafted from hardwearing, 15mm poplar plywood, which has been encased with an equally robust, and great-looking, black diamond tolex, while a vintage B-15 grille cloth keeps the speaker safe, whilst also complementing the design.
Also protecting the PF-115HE from harm are metal corners, which have been screwed into place, and feet keeping the underside safe, whilst allowing the low end to flow freely. All-in the unit is very low-weight, at just 45 lbs / 20.4 kg, and it also comes complete with a set of removable wheels, so you can save your back and push it around. Remove the wheels when playing, and store them in the cab, inside the supplied pouch.
Vintage Portaflex flip-top cabinet design
A classic, but always impressive, feature of Portaflex cabinets is their flip-top design. A small extra that makes a massive difference, this design allows the top of the cabinet to be removed, via four clasps. You can then attached a compatible head amp, such as the PF350, PF500, or PF800, to the lid with the included mounting kit and then reattach it. This stops the head moving or being taken during a set but once you’re finished you can take the lid off, flip it upside down and reattach it to the cab; storing the head inside the cabinet for easy transportation!
