The Apogee GiO is a device that answers the prayers of many guitarists who use Logic Studio 9, Garageband ’11 or Mainstage 2. Whilst these software packages for Mac have much to offer the guitarist in terms of guitar amp simulations and effects, a Mac and software on their own are lacking a few things from their real-life counterparts.

Whilst a Mac’s audio hardware is perfectly respectable for most computer tasks, it doesn’t have a dedicated instrument/ guitar level input. The Apogee GiO is designed very much like a robust, metal, guitar effects unit. Connecting to a Mac via USB, it offers a means of getting a high quality guitar signal into your computer, with high quality audio playback and performance. The GiO aims to make the process of using guitar amp software and more authentic and intuitive.

Whilst the software has taken huge steps in terms of the way it sounds, editing and changing guitar sounds with a mouse is cumbersome to say the least. The GiO changes this by providing a pedalboard controller with five effects switches. These can be used to turn effects on or off as required within Logic ‘s Amp Designer or Pedalboard plug-in, or within Garageband. At the bottom left and bottom right of the unit are a previous preset and next preset control, respectively.

The furthest row of controls equipped on the GiO is designed to allow a guitarist to activate ‘play’, ‘stop’, ‘record’ and other transport controls without having to remove hands from the guitar. No more guitar recordings with rushed or fumbling starts. Well, less anyway… For further control over volume effects, Wah-Wah and filters, there is an input for an expression pedal.
