The Digitech Whammy 5th generation pedal is here, and now it does chords…
The Digitech Whammy 5th generation has been unveiled, and it adds a few great new tricks to the popular pitch bender’s armoury. For those who haven’t come across the Digitech Whammy pedal, it pretty much does what it says on the tin. That is, it aims to provide the same sort of pitch bending functionality provided by a traditional Whammy bar on an electric guitar.
However, as it isn’t limited by the physical constraints of a real whammy bar, it can alter pitch to far greater extremes than those possible in the ‘real world’, and without risk of the guitar going out of tune. This has seen the pedal become a key component in many guitarists’ sound (not least of which, Tom Morello). The latest, 5th generation Whammy pedal, offers even more for the sonically adventurous, with a chord mode added to the single note operation.

Bend chords up to two octaves
The Digitech Whammy pedal allows guitarists (and bassists, for that matter), to raise or lower tuning by up to two octaves (!) via the expression type pedal featured on the unit. This can be used for simple transposes or bends, or truly dramatic and extreme effects. Unlike many pitch-altering effects, the Whammy bends smoothly and naturally. Now, alongside the classic single-note mode, the Whammy 5th generation provides the ability to shift the pitch of whole chords, keeping every note in tune.
The pedal offers more, in the form of nine harmony modes, with differing 2-note intervals, and two detune modes. For those integrating it into a complex, tech heavy set-up, or looking to do some really crazy things in the studio, a MIDI input allows the pedal to be controlled via an external MIDI device. A true bypass ensures that the Digitech Whammy does not colour the sound when switched off, and the unit is a robust, heavy-duty construction, ready for a life of gigging.
The new, updated Digitech Whammy is due to arrive in June, and currently has a projected RRP of £199. Call our stores or customer service team (01925 582420) to pre-order.
