The Electro Harmonix Crying Tone Wah Wah pedal neatly addresses the ‘wear and tear’ issues of traditional wah effects…
The Electro Harmonix Crying Tone Wah Wah Pedal is another new effect from the Mike Matthew ‘s New York based, ‘mad laboratory’ of guitar effects. Restoring the classic ‘Crying Tone’ name, this new Wah-Wah is unlike any ever made. Whilst it looks like any other wah, at first glance, upon further inspection, you will probably be thinking ‘well, there’s the rocker bit, but where’s the base?’ The answer is that it doesn’t have one. Remarkably, the Electro Harmonix Crying Tone has no moving parts, and thus, nothing to wear out with use.
The first effect pedal in the ‘Next Step’ range
The EHX Crying Tone is the first in a new range, dubbed the ‘Next Step’ range. Clearly constructed with the NY brand’s heavy duty, stomp friendly ethics, the Crying tone is built for a gigging life. The unit is has a flat bottom, with a slightly wedge shaped end.
The pedal top-surface is covered with a textured rubber surface, emblazoned with the EHX logo. On the left of the unit, an output jack and power inlet socket feature, with an input jack and a calibration button on the right hand side. Aside from the battery compartment, these are all of the features there seems to be on the outside of the Crying Tone. So how does it work?
EHX are remaining understandably tight-lipped about the technology inside the Crying Tone. However, what has been confirmed is that is has no potentiometers, and thus no gears to wear out, and it isn’t optical. It is, they say, entirely electronic. Well, that’s cleared that up then…(!)

Remarkably, for something that seems too good to be true, the Electro Harmonix Crying Tone Wah Wah Pedal seems to really deliver in terms of performance, with early indications suggesting that there is no discernable difference in performance between this and a regular ‘mechanical’ wah pedal, but without the drawbacks associated with them, and potentially a much longer useable life.
The Electro Harmonix Crying Tone Wah Wah Pedal is due to arrive in May. Call our stores or customer service team (01925 582420) to pre-order.
