The Epiphone Prophecy Les Paul Custom EX Plus re-launches Prophecy range, pleasing shredders everywhere…
The Epiphone Prophecy Les Paul Custom EX Plus first appeared back in 2008. With a darker, rock oriented aesthetic, high gain pickups and fast, slim neck (all, of course, with Epiphone ’s quality construction), it quickly became a favourite of those who liked to play shred guitar. Those who missed out on this superb guitar the first time around can now rejoice – Epiphone has reissued the guitar, and a fine instrument it is too.
High gain EMG humbucker pickups
The Epiphone Prophecy Les Paul Custom EX Plus, cosmetically, seems to make its musical allegiance very clear. With black hardware, and subdued finishes with stunning quilted maple veneer top, complimented by contrasting binding and block fingerboard inlays, this is a guitar that looks a bit ‘meaner’ than an average Les Paul. The body is constructed from mahogany, beneath the maple veneer, and this is matched with a mahogany set neck. The neck profile is a very shredder-friendly, slimmer, SpeedTaper D-profile, finish in satin. This is completed with a 24 fret ebony fingerboard, with a 14” radius.
To match the more ‘rock’ appearance of the guitar, the Prophecy Les Paul Custom EX Plus is equipped with pickups to provide suitable ‘firepower’; two high output EMG humbuckers feature. An EMG 85 is fitted in the neck position, delivering thick, warm tone, via its alnico V magnets. This is paired with the more powerful EMG 81 in the bridge position, which provides more gain, and a slightly more ‘edgy’ tone via its ceramic magnets. This is a pickup combination favoured by many ‘shred’ style players, including Zack Wylde.
The Epiphone Prophecy Les Paul Custom EX Plus is equipped with quality hardware, befitting its ‘high performance’ design. A familiar Tune-o-matic bridge is fitted, along with Grover tuners, and a graphite nut should minimise string breakages, when performances become a little more extreme.
