Fender Blacktop Telecaster Baritone Unveiled

Fender Blacktop Telecaster Baritone Classic Copper

Fender Blacktop Telecaster Baritone adds some ‘clang’ to the ‘twang’

The Fender Blacktop Telecaster Baritone is another new model in the high-powered Blacktop range. Instantly recognisable as being firmly in the Telecaster mould, this is, perhaps the biggest Tele you’ll ever see. This is because this a Baritone guitar, and as a result does everything a bit bigger, and a bit lower. As baritones go, the Blacktop could be one of the most versatile on the market.

Getting Low-down and Twangy…

The Fender Blacktop Telecaster Baritone has much to offer a huge range of musical styles, but what exactly is a baritone guitar. In essence, a baritone is a bigger version of a standard six string, with a far longer scale length. The result is a guitar that is pitched far lower, typically from B to B, rather than E to E. The first genre to employ the electric baritone extensively was surf guitar, though since then it has found its way into jazz, blues, country and more. One of the more common uses, particularly in country music, is for ‘Tic-tac bass’, whereby a muted baritone doubles the bass guitar part.

It stands to reason, then, that the Blacktop Telecaster Baritone will hold a huge amount of appeal to those involved in country and blues; it is, after all, modelled on that landmark of guitar twang, the Telecaster. Rather than being based around the two pickup configuration of that landmark Fender guitar, the Blacktop Baritone Tele has three pickups. Single-coil Telecaster pickups feature at the neck and middle positions, while a high output humbucker features at the bridge. With a five-way selector switch, this is a guitar capable of a myriad of tones, from trademark Tele twang, to deep, roaring humbucker tone.

The Fender Blacktop Telecaster Baritone is constructed in a classic Telecaster template. A solid alder body is matched with a bolt-on maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, with a scale length of 27”. Chrome hardware and a black 3-ply scratchplate provide the finishing touches to the guitar, which is available in a choice of 3-Colour Sunburst, Ghost Silver and Classic Copper colour finishes.
