Gibson Midtown Standard P-90 Launched

Gibson Midtown Standard P-90 Finishes

The new Gibson Midtown Standard P-90 adds a new, edgy flavour to this semi-hollow favourite

The Gibson Midtown Standard P-90 is a new addition to the ever-popular semi-hollow Midtown line-up. And yes, you guessed it, it swaps the regular Midtown Standard ‘s humbuckers for a gleaming pair of P-90 ‘soap bars’. The Standard was hailed for its versatility, providing a balance between hollow-body and solid-body tones. This new P-90 equipped version should provide an interesting spin on that theme…

Smaller body, with mahogany back and sides, and maple top

In you missed the original (and Custom model for that matter), the Gibson Midtown Standard P-90 has a very neat design that borrows some of the best bits of a Les Paul, and marries them to some of the best bits of Gibson semi-hollow model. So, the body is a chambered semi-hollow design, of the type that you may expect to see on an ES model. It is slightly smaller, and more manageable than a 335, however, and features a flat, rather than arched top.

Gibson Midtown Standard P-90 Pelham Blue

Unlike a 335’s laminated maple construction, the Gibson Midtown Standard P-90 is constructed with a semi-hollow, chambered mahogany body, and a maple top. Sound familiar? Yes, this is the classic formula more regularly found in the iconic Les Paul range.

The pickups equipped here are, of course, the classic P-90 ‘soap bars’. Based around an Alnico V magnet, these single coil pickups have a wide coil, which produces a tone that is a balance between the heavier, thick tones of a humbucker and the sharp snap of a typical single coil. The result is a guitar that is warm, and rich, but with enough mid-range ‘bark’ and ‘bite’, to cut through just about anything. They’re incredibly versatile pickups, to boot.
