The Korg Kronos X is here, adding even more power to the world’s most powerful workstation
The Korg Kronos X has been revealed, and unbelievably it offers even more than the original Kronos. The original Korg Kronos may have possessed a name that made it sound like an evil genius from a sci-fi film, but its megalomania only extended to being the most powerful synth on earth. Packing an incredible 9 different synthesis engines into its sleek exterior, the Kronos could emulate the MS20 and Polysix, had astonishing acoustic piano and electric piano engines, along with tone-wheel organ, cutting edge PCM, physical modelling and more.
This was married to a unit with a 16-track MIDI sequencer, 16-track audio recorder, Karma technology and an effects processor capable of up to 16 effects simultaneously. How then. You may ask, ‘how could they expand it?’
Bigger Solid State Drive, more RAM, huge sample libraries
Physically, the Korg Kronos X looks identical to its older brother, aside from a small red ‘X’ beside the word Kronos. Internally, however, several key components have been expanded. The Solid-state drive has been doubled in capacity to 62GB, while an additional 2GB of sample RAM is also added.
The purpose of this expansion becomes clear when the changes to the onboard sampler (via the v.2.0 OS update) are considered. Now, the User Sample Bank feature allows users to create enormous sample libraries, vastly increasing the Kronos X’s huge creative potential.
In addition, the Korg Kronos X is compatible with Korg PadKontrol MIDI controllers, to program drums, or trigger samples and chords. For transferring data quickly from a host computer, the X is compatible with USB Ethernet adaptors.
Should you be lucky enough to own the original, but wish to upgrade it to a Kronos X, you can upgrade to OS version 2.0 via a free download, plus your synth can be returned to Korg to have an upgrade kit fitted, with extra sample RAM, and an extra Solid State drive installed for an additional charge. At time of writing, a cost is not available for this.
