A genuine, smashed Kurt Cobain Guitar was available to the highest bidder on US show ‘Final Offer’
The Kurt Cobain guitar method was not often pretty, but it was certainly effective. The Nirvana front-man detonated conceptions of how the guitar should be played and sound at the time, taking the spirit, and DIY ethic of punk, and supercharging it with more power, dark themes, but underlying pop sensibilities. It also often resulted in his guitar of choice being reduced to matchwood.
Imagine then, if someone approached you with a guitar, not only previously owned by Cobain, but also previously smashed by him whilst on tour promoting debut album ‘Bleach’. If you had the money, could you resist? This is the scenario that occurred on an episode of US show final offer that aired on the Discovery Channel this week.
Make me an offer I can’t refuse…
The show is the US equivalent of the UK show ‘Four Rooms’, in which members of the public bring rare or unusual items to show to four experts/ collectors, who must entice them to sell with an appealing offer. The guitar (pictured top) was brought in by owner Brian Scott, whose wife has, er… politely asked him to scale down his memorabilia collection (ahem!).
Though the guitar Kurt Cobain is most regularly associated would perhaps be a Fender Jaguar or a Mustang, this appears to be a Mosrite, or Univox imitation. Unusually, this is a right handed guitar, that Kurt strung to play left handed, and the back is etched with carvings and drawings (some described as ‘obscene’ by the owner!).

As collectable as this piece of Rock ‘n’ Roll history is, if you would like a Kurt Cobain guitar of your own, then this might be a little out of your price range. If this is the case then you could do far worse than the Fender Kurt Cobain Jaguar, and Kurt Cobain Mustang. Both of these guitars are based on Cobain’s own modified guitars, and so are a mixture of standard Fender spec, and the more high-powered additions he made to them…
