The Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol S2 is the second complete DJ software controller from Native, following the critically acclaimed S4. Compact, portable design
The Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol S2 is clearly designed to be a compact and portable solution for the travelling DJ. Measuring just 43.8 cm in width and 29.2 cm in depth, with a depth of 4.4 cm, the Native S2 is very svelte indeed. Weighing in at just 2.7 kg, you won’t be worrying your chiropractor when transporting it either.
The design of the Traktor Kontrol S2 follows the familiar 2-platters/ decks, with a standard mixer control section in the centre. Full EQ controls are included for each mixer channel, along with a headphone cue control button for each. Unlike many DJ controllers at this price point, the S2 is constructed very robustly, with hardwearing faders for a life of heavy use. It is clear that Native have designed this to be gigged with. Another feature unique on a controller of this price is the addition of a ‘samples’ knob, which allows the eight sample decks to be mixed smoothly alongside the two main decks.
Tight controller integration
The Kontrol S2 is, as should be expected, designed to integrate incredibly tightly with Traktor. The unit physically ‘mirrors’ the software layout, meaning that you’ll usually find the appropriate control in the same place as is appears on the screen. The FX section features assign buttons that allow each deck to send audio to the two FX. The platters are high resolution and pressure sensitive, ensuring responsive performance for all DJ tasks, whether that’s cuing up a track, adjusting tempo and timing, or even scratching. In fact, the S2 transfers 30 times more data the similar controllers.
The audio interface built into the Traktor Kontrol S2 is built to the high standards we have come to expect from Native. Equipped with Cirrus Logic AD/ DA digital converters, the S2 delivers detailed, open sound with plenty of low-end weight. To ensure that this isn’t ‘lost in translation’, high quality balanced outputs are featured.
