The new Numark 4Track – the ultimate DJ controller for Traktor?
The Numark 4Trak DJ controller, announced at the recent NAMM show, is the latest addition to Numark ‘s highly regarded range of DJ controllers. Taking the technologies developed for the ‘NS’ range of controllers, the 4Trak is a controller designed, primarily, to control Native Instruments Traktor DJ software. Offering control of four ‘decks’, incredible FX manipulation, with a built-in audio interface with balanced outputs, and robust construction, the 4Trak is a truly professional solution for Traktor users.

The Numark 4trak has a two-platter design, common to many modern DJ controllers, with a mixer section between these. Unlike many controllers of this type, however, the 4Trak is equipped with separate channel faders and EQ for each of its four channels. Rather than being simply a controller for Traktor, this functions as a true mixer for external audio sources. Each of the channels has an RCA input, enabling up to four line level sources, such as CD players, to be connected, two which are able to be switched to phono inputs, the other two able to be switched to microphone inputs. This enables the 4Trak to be the hub of a DJ set-up containing a computer running Traktor, alongside turntables and CD decks, with all sources able to be mixed seamlessly.
The Numark 4Trak offers an incredible amount of control over effects and filters, via the FX Kommand Console. This provides two ‘decks’ of control over effects, assignable via Traktor, each with three parameter controls and a time division control, and a filter control for each of the unit’s four channels.
For fast cueing, the 4Trak is equipped with the same ribbon strips, first seen on Numark ‘s NS7 controller. This enables a track to be quickly scanned, and the ‘needle dropped’ via a touch strip above each respective platter. LED indicators on the strip itself indicate track position. The platters themselves are ultra-accurate, with 3600 ticks of resolution, providing natural, sensitive and precise control. Much like the ‘NS’ series controllers, the 4Trak negates the need for a mouse when using Traktor, as all functions, including song selection and loading, can be carried out via the controls on the unit. Despite the armoury of controls to hand, the 4Trak remains intuitive, with controls mirroring controls on the screen fairly closely.
