The Numark Redphone was one of the more surprising announcements at the recent NAMM show. Launched amongst the astonishing array of new DJ products, this DJ monitoring solution is a neat solution for DJ’s who find that being tethered to the mixer with traditional headphones is frustrating. Bearing the sort of relationship to a pair of headphones that a monocle does to a pair of glasses, the Redphone is different to say the least, but it has several benefits that will appeal to many (and won’t make you look like Chris Eubank or Patrick Moore…)
Single driver, stick design
The Numark Redphone is designed around a single, high quality 50mm driver of the same type used in the Red Wave headphones. This is surrounded by a padded ear cup, and attached by a swivel mount to a cushioned, ergonomically designed handle. A single coiled cable connects to the end of the handle, and features a 1/8” jack with a ¼” jack adaptor.
Because the Redphone is not physically attached or clamped to the DJ’s head, it can just be picked up and listened to when needed, then put down. Its curved, padded design means that it can be easily held between the shoulder and ear, to free up both hands. The closed back design provides excellent isolation when required.
Traditional headphones are generally either clamped to a DJ’s head, or around the neck, meaning that to step away from the rig requires both ands top remove the cans. The Redphone makes it far easier for the DJ to move around, if needed.
