The Pioneer DDJ-S1 DJ controller combines Pioneer functionality with a design specifically for Serato Itch software
The Pioneer DDJ-S1 DJ controller is one of growing number of controllers designed specifically for Serato Itch DJ software package. Whilst Pioneer have been a major force in the DJ World for some time (in no small part due to the CDJ range) it is only relatively recently that the brand has entered the rapidly expanding Computer DJ market. Last year saw the brand expand this range more fully with the launch of three new DJ controllers. The DDJ-S1 was one of these, and it provides a truly professional solution, with Pioneer ’s trademark quality.
Audio interface with balanced outputs
The Pioneer DDJ-S1 combines a fully featured DJ controller with a high-spec audio interface. Connecting to a host computer via a USB socket, the audio interface is equipped with both balanced XLR outputs and unbalanced RCA outputs, along with a stereo RCA aux input. The circuitry employed in the master output section of the unit is derived from Pioneer ‘s pro DJ mixers, ensuring the highest quality audio reproduction.
The DDJ-S1 mirrors the functionality offered by the Serato Itch software package, but with Pioneer ‘s renowned functional design. The controller follows a familiar format, with two platters, and a mixer section in the centre. A tempo slider for each deck allows those essential tempo tweaks when beat-matching, whereas hot-cues and loop controls allow for more complex manipulation and sonic mangling… In addition, each deck features a ‘needle search’ strip control with ‘playing address’ track progression LED provides a means of swiftly finding a particular point in a track.
Effects Control Area
One of the key benefits of a controller such as the Pioneer DDJ-S1, which is designed specifically for one piece of software, is that its physical controls match those of the software very closely. The effects control area featured on this unit is one such example, offering hands-on control over Serato Itch DJ FX. The two FX can be routed to any source (deck A, B, master output, microphone or aux input) independently, with level controls, a parameter control, plus a control to change FX type from the unit itself.
The DDJ-S1 is a sleek and lightweight unit, and features a laptop docking design, so that a laptop can slide under the unit, without hiding the screen, to minimise the footprint size. For added convenience, it is a plug and play device, comes complete with Serato Itch and is even powered over USB, providing a neat and powerful, all-in-one DJ solution.
