Pioneer Nexus – DJM 900 DJ Mixer

Pioneer Nexus DJM-900 DJ Mixer

The Pioneer Nexus DJM 900 DJ Mixer raises the bar for connectivity and flexibility

Currently the only product to bear the Pioneer Nexus name, the DJM-900 has some pretty big shoes to fill. The DJM range has always been a staple choice for DJs, regardless of which medium they choose to DJ from, in no small part due to the excellent, BPM matched effects. In this age of the laptop DJ, controllerism, and multi-media DJ set-ups, what does the DJM-900 offer?

The word Nexus has several meanings, one ‘…a connection or tie’, another ‘…the core or centre’. These give ample indication as to how pioneer sees this new mixer. With four channels, comprehensive effects and EQ, the DJM-900 Nexus stands apart as a premium quality DJ mixer in its own right.

With DJ-Link technology, USB controller connectivity, and MIDI connectivity, along with a premium built-in audio interface and completely overhauled effects unit, the Nexus is vying to be the centre of all of your DJ connections…

Fully Traktor Scratch Certified

The DJM-900 is an incredibly well specified, four channel DJ mixer. Built as a club mixer, it features sturdy, liquid proof P-lock faders that are designed to have no electronics from directly beneath them. Each of the four channels has it’s own dedicated channel strip, with fader, EQ and colour FX control, plus independent source select.

As previously mentioned, however, the new, tech packed functions give this Pioneer Nexus mixer its ‘Nexus’ title. Rather than being ‘just’ a mixer, the DJM-900 is also a premium USB audio interface with four stereo inputs and outputs.

Crucially, it also doubles as a plug-and-play MIDI controller for Traktor or Ableton. For those using Traktor Scratch, the unit is fully Traktor Scratch certified, and can be used with timecode CDs or vinyl directly through the mixer.

As a controller, the DJM-900 even sends MIDI LFO data, so that controllers within Traktor can be modulated by the Pioneer Nexus’ MIDI output. Very cool.

The DJM-900 is also equipped with Pioneer DJ-Link technology, which allows compatible Pioneer devices to be connected together via the equipped Ethernet port to share a single track library, or connect to the incredibly useful Rekordbox library management software.

Other neat features of this Pioneer Nexus include the X-Pad control that allows an effect’s timing to be controlled easily, and the fully updated effects unit, with six-channel assignable ‘Sound Color FX’.

The DJM-900 is a huge step forward from its predecessor, positioning itself at the centre of any DJ situation you may be in. The fact that this seems to be the first of a range of Pioneer Nexus products (well, it would be very odd if this was the only product to bear the name, wouldn’t it?), and given the ultra connectable nature of it suggests that we may well be treated to a range of ‘connect-me-to-anything’ style DJ products from Pioneer in the future. I, for one, can’t wait…
