Reason 6.5 Bags Two Awards in Music Tech Magazine

Music Tech Magazine hand Reason 6.5 two awards in this month’s review

Reason 6.5 seems to be creating more waves every day (in terms of critical acclaim, and, well… literally, too). This update has attracted the most press attention since the package launched nearly 12 (twelve!) years ago. Why? Rack Extensions have opened up the Reason rack to third parties for the first time.

Already, there is a sizable, and rapidly expanding library of 3rd party add-ons available, many of which have gotten the music making community into something of an excitable state.

Clearly, it isn’t just us that have been blown away by this update. This month Music Tech magazine put Reason 6.5 under the microscope, and awarded it the Music Tech Choice award, and the Music Tech Innovation award. Not bad, eh?

Before Reason 6.5 came along, Reason 6 was already an incredibly powerful package, however. Originally conceived as a ‘virtual rack’ of equipment, Reason has an incredible arsenal of sonic weapons at its disposal.

Three, powerful synthesizers, two drum machines/ synthesizers, two samplers, a step sequencer and an arpeggiator, stacks of effects and many more virtual rack items are already at your disposal. Perhaps Reasons most audacious ‘flourish’ was that at the touch of a button the rack could be flipped and audio signals re-routed, just like real hardware.

Version 6.0 added the ability to record audio, the new mixing desk (based on an SSL 9000), and several, all-new instruments and effects. Now, the addition of Rack Extensions has opened Reason 6.5 up to a whole new world of development, allowing effects, instruments and other audio tools developed by third parties to be opened up in the Reason Rack, and used and combined with other standard rack units.

Perhaps the strongest indication that this new format had been fully embraced was the number of developers who were onboard at launch. Among them were huge, highly respected developers such as Korg, FXpansion and Rob Papen.

Reason 6.5 is a watershed in the software’s development; the increased potential now offered by the package is mind-blowing. As Music Tech magazine stated, before awarding it a mark of 9/10,

‘(Reason 6.5)…surely represents the opening of a new chapter in the life of Reason. We look forward to seeing what developers come up with – and so should you…”
