The Roland AC-90 acoustic amp provides everything a gigging acoustic guitarist might need
When the Roland AC-90 was announced a few years ago, Roland billed it as ‘The arrival of a future classic’. A very bold statement, you might say, but what is that inspires such confidence in this particular amp. Well, aside from being the continuation of a hugely respected range, the AC-90 was designed with just about everything a gigging acoustic guitarist may need, in a powerful and robust cabinet. If you haven’t already seen it, here’s what you get for your hard-earned cash.

The Roland AC-90 continued the award winning AC range of acoustic guitar amps. The other models in the current range are the original, 2 x 30 Watt AC-60, and the ultra-compact, battery power-able, 2 x15 Watt AC-33. Both are excellent amplifiers, but in gig situations, they can occasionally be a little underpowered. This is where the AC-90 fits the bill nicely…
The Roland AC-90 is based around a 90-Watt stereo (2 x 45 Watt) amplifier. Styled in the same understated manner, the AC-90 is lightweight, compact and a little bit innocuous looking. However, beneath the mild mannered exterior, it has an enormous amount to offer.
Switch between piezo and magnetic pickup response
Unusually for an amp of this type, it features a two-way neodymium speaker system. Two 8” woofers and two 3” tweeters supply tone that has rich and full lower frequencies, and sweet, detailed higher frequencies. To ensure that the amp response is carefully tuned to the guitar you are using, it’s guitar input can be switched between piezo and magnetic pickup response.
For the solo performer, the guitar input is joined by an XLR microphone preamp, complete with phantom power. This means that the Roland AC-90 can bypass the need for a PA system at small acoustic gigs. Onboard Stereo FX add to the amps ‘completeness’, and includes the famous wide chorus effect, and these can be controlled via a footswitch. Anti-feedback control ensures that no jarring screams or wails should ruin the show (unless its part of the performance…
