Roland Controller Keyboards – Pro by Name and by Nature

Roland Controller Keyboards - A-300PRO

Roland controller keyboards provide close control of your DAW with the feel and quality of a Roland synthesizer

The Roland controller keyboard range is something of a rarity in the modern world; everything you want, and nothing that you don’t. Well that’s not strictly true- there are number of things that the Roland A-Pro series does that you probably won’t realise that you want until you try them. Then you may struggle to live without them…

In essence the A-300PRO, A-500PRO and A-800PRO provide an arsenal of assignable controllers in a USB keyboard, in 3 different sizes. Nothing too unusual, you may say. However, this is a Roland product. As such, the unit is constructed to the highest of standards, and with the same key bed it uses in its range of acclaimed synthesizers and keyboards. In addition, it has a number of neat twists that set it apart from its peers…

Pro-feel, Pro Performance

The failing of many controllers is that the keyboard itself leaves a lot to be desired. Sometimes, but not always, these are constructed by ‘peripheral’ manufacturers, rather than musical instrument specialists. The result is a keyboard that doesn’t do a great job of translating performance.

Roland controller keyboards have a lovely, smooth and expressive keyboard that responds dynamically, with low noise and with adjustable velocity curves. Keyboard players will instantly recognise the difference. Plus, aftertouch provides even more control.

Packed into its front fascia are an impressive 45 assignable controls. These include 9 rotary controls and 9 faders, with a plethora of assignable buttons, to boot. Again, this being a Roland product, all are put together with purpose, and well up the job of being enthusiastically pressed, twisted or flicked in a creative frenzy…

Next to these are eight velocity sensitive pads. Aside from the traditional application for these pads to trigger drum sounds or samples, they can also be assigned to control aftertouch or other controller data. Editor software provides an easy means of setting up maps for whichever software of other equipment you would like to use it with.

Designed as musical instrument for real musicians

The physical design of the PRO-series Roland controller keyboards provides further evidence of Roland’s extensive experience, gleaned from decades producing professional equipment for musicians. A bright, backlit display allows parameter information to be easily visible on stage or in the studio, whilst positioning of all connections on the side of the unit means no awkward cables at the rear to carve up desk space, and make positioning of laptops or other gear a problem.

Roland controller keyboards have always been something of a ‘premium’ choice, and the PRO-series is no exception. Key splits, adjustable velocity curves, MIDI in and out, alongside FPT low latency MIDI data transmission further cement this position. With 32-key (A-300PRO), 49-key (A-500PRO) and 61-key versions (A-800PRO), there’s a model to fit most musical situations.
