The Future of Guitar in-store event at Dawsons Liverpool shows the huge potential of the Roland GR-55 guitar synthesizer
The Roland GR-55 Guitar Synthesiser is a product that is often misunderstood. Combining a vast array of Roland ’s cutting edge technology, this innocuous pedal-board style unit can help your guitar to produce just about any sound you could imagine. At its heart is a high quality Roland Synthesiser, alongside COSM modelling and effects technology. The words ‘technology’ and ‘guitarist’ sometimes don’t sit well together, however, with some unnecessarily wary of employing new gear that would vastly expand the palette of tones available to them.

At the Roland Planet at Dawsons Liverpool, product Specialist Mark Harley will be running the ‘Roland GR-55 Guitar Synthesiser – The Future of Guitar’ in-store event on Saturday 12th May. This is aimed at demonstrating the jaw-dropping capabilities of this unit, and just how inspiring it can be for all guitarists.
Four sound sources simultaneously
The Roland GR-55 is the latest generation in a family of guitar synths that first appeared in 1977(!) Roland has strived to push this technology forward since then, with the GR-55 being the 11th model Roland has produced. The result is a machine capable of combining two PCM synthesiser waveforms, with COSM guitar modelling, plus the guitar signal.
A staggering 900 synthesiser tones are available, with acoustic instruments such as pianos and strings, alongside organs, synthesiser tones and even percussion. For more traditional tones, the on-board COSM modelling provides a huge palette of classic amp tones and effects. These different sources can be blended between, to create incredibly complex tones.
The Roland GR-55 Guitar Synthesiser responds to the player quickly and accurately (via a GK pickup or Roland Ready Strat), ensuring that a perfect performance is preserved. Don’t take my word for it, however. Visit the Roland Planet at Dawsons Liverpool, and let Mark Harley give you a guided tour. Mark is a man who talks affectionately to his guitar amp, so his opinion of all things guitar should be trusted…
Roland was kind enough to loan me a GR-55 (thanks Roland!), so I’m hoping to get ‘under-the-bonnet’ of it, and publish my findings soon. Stay posted…
