The new TC Electronic BG250 Bass Combo was a really surprising new product at last week’s Musikmesse. ‘What’s so surprising about a bass amp?’ you may ask. Well, as with most things designed by TC Electronic, this has some cutting edge technology under the hood. In this case, the amp is Toneprint enabled. It delivers a whopping 250-Watts of power, and does it in a package weighing just 16kg. And if that were not enough, it has a projected RRP. of just £329.
Toneprint Enabled
Perhaps the most unique feature of the TC Electronic BG250 is the inclusion of TC’s Toneprint technology. This groundbreaking technology allows tones (some of which tweaked by TC endorsees) to be uploaded to any compatible device. Initially, this was done by hooking the device up to a host computer via USB, and uploading tones downloaded from TC’s website.
Recently, however, the company developed an app for iPhone and Android. This converts Toneprints to a unique magnetic impulse, which is ‘beamed’ into the device via the connected guitar’s pickup. Easy, flexible tone changes, via the phone app, can be carried out without fear of interference.
Powerful, Ultra Lightweight design
The Toneprint technology equipped to the TC Electronic BG250 would be worth little, if the amp itself did not perform. I’m happy to report, however, that this is not the case. The BG250 was put through its paces by our resident bass guru, Andy Travis, at the Musikmesse, and it sounds great.
The unit is built around a 15” driver and custom tweeter, with a 250W amp. TubeDrive technology enables tube pre-amp and power amp simulation, with contoured bass controls. This combination enables a huge variety of authentic tones to be achieved with ease, from modern overdriven tones to classic, Motown sounds. The renowned, TC Chorus effect adds further to the tonal palette.
Remarkably, the TC BG350 packs all of this into an incredibly lightweight cabinet. Weighing in at just 16kg, this is an incredibly gig-friendly combo. Plus, the TC Electronic name emblazoned on the amp’s heavy-duty front grille should provide ample reassurance that this is a piece of kit that can be relied upon.
