The TC Helicon VoiceTone Mic Mechanic has been announced at Summer NAMM, and it could be the ‘missing link’ that your live rig is crying out for. TC Helicon are the only brand solely dedicated to producing vocal processors, and as you might imagine, they’ve gotten pretty good at it…
In fact, TC Helicon produces some of the most natural sounding, and powerful pitch correction, harmoniser and just about any other vocal effects you can think of. With the new Mic Mechanic, they’ve packed a range of essential vocal tools into a convenient and easy to use effects pedal. We find out whether it has your vocal engine purring nicely, or throws a spanner in the works in our Mic Mechanic review.
Reverb, Delay, and Pitch Correction, with a superb TC Mic Preamp
The TC Helicon VoiceTone Mic Mechanic packs a range of essential vocal processors, into its robust, compact red chassis. TC reverbs are internationally renowned, and the Mic Mechanic offers a range of these to the vocalist. From tight room style reverbs, to huge halls, just about every acoustic space is available.
As you might expect from a brand that designs and builds some of the world’s premium studio effects units (such as TC Electronic’s System 6000 reverb), these are of impressive quality. Small room settings are bright, but transparent, and halls are lush, rich and complex.
Delays are equally well catered for. Everything from a simple slapback, to longer delay effects with far more repetition is available, with a ‘tap’ button to ensure it is in time with the track.
As already stated, TC produces some of the most natural sounding pitch correction units available. The TC Helicon VoiceTone Mic Mechanic is equipped with an easy to use pitch corrector that can be employed as a subtle ‘fixer’ when performing, or used as an effect, as used by Cher, T-Pain etc. Again, this has all of the traits of the more expensive TC Helicon units, and is capable of very natural pitch fixes through to extreme, heavily effected ‘robot’ effects.
Perhaps the most amazing aspect of the Mic Mechanic is the built-in Adaptive Tone technology. This automatically adjusts the EQ, Gate, Compression and De-esser to provide a great vocal sound with the vocalist having to do anything. Often, this type of ‘intelligent’ feature results in a tone that is at best, a bit of an ‘average’ setting that requires fine tuning.
Here, however, the results were impressively usable on every occasion. Good work, TC.
This would mean nothing if the mic signal entering the unit was poor. The VoiceTone Mic Mechanic is equipped with a high quality, TC mic pre-amp with phantom power however. In addition, the unit is compatible with the TC-Helicon MP-75 microphone, which allows the unit to be controlled remote from the mic.
The TC Helicon VoiceTone Mic Mechanic is a neat vocal processor that has the essentials, all of premium quality, in a convenient, easy to operate unit that is sure to appeal to a wide range of performing vocalists. It sounds great, is built solidly and is ideal for a gigging vocalists who need the best vocal tone with easy, hands on control.
