Like many modern innovations, the Electro Harmonix Hot Tubes Nano takes a great existing design, and packs it into a unit that is smaller and more convenient. The original Hot Tubes pedal was released in 1978, and quickly had an army of devotees. The overdrive circuit used was particularly sensitive to picking, dynamics and volume, and it was this unique expressiveness that made the original so renowned (and makes the vintage originals so desirable to this day…)

The new, Hot Tubes Nano crams this classic overdrive design into a diminutive, pedal board-friendly, compact design. The key to the pedal’s uniquely responsive tone was the CMOS circuit that it was built around. The Nano version uses the very same circuit design.

Controls are kept to the familiar, simple combination of Volume, Overdrive, and Tone, with a Tone bypass switch, too. With these tone-shaping tools, all manner of overdrive tones can be created, from simple, mild drive, through to heavy, classic distortion sounds. Where the Hot Tubes Nano particularly excels, however, is in producing the sort of dynamic tones that are generally only achievable via real tubes- tones that sound over driven when played harder, but clean up when dynamics are backed off, or the guitar volume is nudged down.

The Electro Harmonix Hot Tubes Nano is a reissue of a guitar FX classic (a glance at current vintage prices will confirm this). To get this same circuit in a compact, robust unit, with true bypass, at this low price is an offer too good to miss…
