The Electro Harmonix Micro Q-Tron Guitar Effects Pedal is identical to the original EHX Mini Q-Tron but in a more compact and portable pedal. The envelope controlled filter is a unique type of sound modifier in which the user's playing style controls the effect. The volume of the input signal (also known as the envelope) controls the cut-off frequency or the centre frequency of a swept filter. As your instrument's volume increases or decreases, so does the pitch of the filter. A pedal like this can lead to some seriously experimental effects, adding a little more surrealism to your song writing.
With regard to connecting the pedal up, it couldn't be easier: guitar connected to pedal input; amp output connected to your amp (or the next pedal in your chain) - simple. The control layout is equally as simple, yet offers an astonishingly varied and unique array of sounds to play with. The DRIVE control adjusts the filter sweep sensitivity - the higher the setting, the higher in frequency the filter leaps when you play. The Q control determines the peak bandwidth of the filter - the higher the Q control setting, the narrower the peak to create a stark and dramatic sound. The MODE rotary switch allows you to determine what frequency range the filter will pass: LP (Low Pass); BP (Band Pass); or HP (High Pass).
Status LED and Power
The Status LED enables you to see whether the pedal is active (LED on) or inactive (LED off), something that is often the lowest concern on the list until you're on a very noisy, darkened stage with only have the lights to guide you. As with the tank-like chassis, the footswitch feels very resilient, with an encouraging click that offers a reassuringly solid response.
Power can be supplied to the Micro Q-Tron in one of two options: battery or power supply. Each unit is supplied with a 9-Volt battery to get you started, and at any point can be switched out for a replacement, making it entirely portable. However, during lengthy gigs, night after night, a 9-Volt power supply may be favoured. The connector on the front of the Micro Q-Tron applies to a 9-Volt battery eliminator capable of delivering 100mA of current. The inner ring of the eliminator must be negative, with a positive outer ring. The battery can be left in or removed when the power supply is in use, it’s up to you.
