The Electro Harmonix OD Glove is another classic flavour of overdrive tone from New York’s finest effects designers. The brand that brought the world the iconic Big Muff pedal has taken a slightly different approach, but created a pedal that maintains the EHX magic.
The OD Glove is one the EHX’s smaller pedals, with dimensions you would expect from a typical compact stomp box. Those who aim to add this to an existing pedal board should have no problems find space for this.
The main aim of this pedal is to recreate a range of classic overdrive tones, with the rich tones of British amps, and the EL34 valves that are key to their sound, the primary focus.
The EHX OD Glove is built around a MOSFET circuit, and offers the user four front panel controls to achieve its array of tones. A volume control provides an easy means to use the pedal as a simple gain boost. A Tone knob provides an easy means of adjusting the level of upper-frequency harmonics, and the Gain control adjusts the amount of ‘drive’. Below these controls is a Tone Shift switch, which changes the mid frequency curve.
This simple selection of controls allows a huge array of tones to be wrung from this pedal, from classic clean boost tones, to bluesy crunch, through to pure Brit-style distortion. In addition, inside the pedal, a voltage switch allows the feel of the pedal to be tweaked, too. At 9V, the pedal has a more compressed sound, whilst at 18V, it takes on a more open and focused tone.
The OD Glove features the classic, EHX, heavy-duty construction, and esoteric graphics that make them so easily recognisable. With such rich, and versatile overdrive tones on offer, this is worthy addition to any pedal board.
