The Epiphone Casino Coupe builds upon the one of Gibson and Epiphone’s biggest recent successes, the ES-339. This guitar took the key elements of the Dot, and built it in a smaller size. Now, the Casino Coupe does the same trick for the Casino, removing the solid centre-block of the 339, and leaving an entirely hollow, slim and compact body. The result is a marvellous thing indeed…
On paper, the specification of the Coupe appears to be identical to a regular Casino. The body is built from laminated maple, with vintage style ‘F’ holes, for example. However, it has been shrunk to the same size as the 339, making it both more manageable, and giving it more focused tonal voice.
This is paired with a glued-in mahogany neck, shaped to a SlimTaper profile and completed with a rosewood fingerboard with parallelogram inlays.
In terms of onboard electronics, the Casino Coupe is follows the same ‘magic formula’ as its bigger sibling. Two P90 pickups are fitted, with a P90R in the neck position and a more ‘lead’ tone oriented P90T at the bridge position. These are wired via a 3-way selector, with individual tone and volume controls for each pickup. These wide, single-coil pickups produce a tone that is richer than most single-coils, with an edgier, more mid-focussed tone than humbuckers. The tonal range covers everything from rich clean tones, to aggressive, overdriven snarl.
In combination with the small body, and lively hollow construction, the Casino Coupe promises tonal character informed by the bigger Casino, but with a tighter response. Plus, the smaller body can make the guitarist attack the guitar in a different way. It is, for want of a better word, more ‘chuckable’. The compact size means that smaller players can get their hands on classic hollow-body design in a more manageable form.
The Epiphone Casino Coupe looks very likely to win over many, many fans. With all of its predecessor’s character, in a small package, it manages the feat of inheriting Casino character, but being very much a unique guitar in its own right.
