The Epiphone Casino Coupe is another great example of Epiphone’s (and Gibson’s) commitment to innovation, and refusal to rest. Clearly inspired by the success of the recent ES-339, which took all of the key ingredients of a Dot and shrunk them down to a smaller, more manageable body, bringing with it a unique tonal character, the Casino Coupe does exactly the same for the Casino, replacing the Dot’s solid centre block with a body that is entirely hollow.
The body has the same dimensions as the 339, with a thinline profile and small silhouette. Made from laminated maple, with F-shaped sound-holes, it has the same iconic looks as its bigger, older brother. This is paired-up with a mahogany, glued-in neck, carved to a SlimTaper profile. A rosewood fingerboard is fitted to this, with tasteful, parallelogram inlays.
The pickups selected for the Casino Coupe are the same as those fitted to the bigger Casino: P90s. Though single-coil designs, the wider coils deliver tone with fatter, warmer character that a typical single-coil. In addition, the pickups have a pronounced mid-range that set them apart from a humbucker.
On the Coupe, a rhythm oriented P90R is fitted in the neck position, with the lead-oriented P90T at the bridge position, with individual tone and volume controls for each and a 3-way selector switch. Combined with the small, light body, the two pickups deliver a range of tones from polite, rich and silky clean, to raucous, edgy overdrive, with lively dynamics and focus.
A Locktone bridge is equipped, which keeps tuning rock-solid whilst supplying plenty of sustain. A 3-ply scratchplate contrasts beautifully with the Vintage Sunburst finish, whilst giving it the same, killer aesthetics as its older sibling.
The Epiphone Casino Coupe is yet another, great new model from Epiphone, that both pays tribute to a timeless, classic design, but gives it entirely new twist
