The Epiphone Limited Edition Jeff Waters Annihilation-II Flying V Guitar in Annihilator Red, is the loud and proud signature models of - arguably - one of the most exciting guitarists of his generation. As the lead guitarist, lead vocalist, chief songwriter, engineer and producer of legendary metal band Annihilator, Waters has pushed the envelope for over 30 years, releasing 15 albums, and taking on relentless touring schedules. As you can imagine, a prolific guitarist such as Waters whose life revolves around recording, gigging, teaching, and running clinics, must have a reliable axe to wield. Not only that, but it has to look just as "metal" as the man himself. It is safe to say that the Annihilation-II picks up from where the Annihilation V left off, and smashes it out of the park.
Uncompromising Flying V Body
Jeff Waters is an unabashed metaller whose shredding skills are second to none - and nothing screams metal like a Flying V. Epiphone have duly obliged by shaping the mahogany body to the instantly recognisable V-profile, which has been finished in a striking Annihilation Red finish. The mahogany gives the guitar a feel that is substantial without feeling heavy or cumbersome, creating the perfect balance between offering a generous warmth with plenty of sustain, whilst retaining a lightweight and easy to manoeuvre playing feel. The V-shape allows the body to rest just right for perform anchored-chugging and fat palm-muted riffs, whilst the profile removes any obstacles from your fretting hand's path as you sail up to the highest frets. Epiphone has included a "non-slip shred grip" on the lower bout to prevent the body from slipping during energetic performances.
Shred-friendly Maple Neck
Fitted to the body via a sturdy bolt-on construction is a supple maple neck, which has been shaped to the fast-playing slimtaper D profile. The generous 24.75-inch scale offers the optimum for the strings to uphold tension whilst resonate freely for a superb response. Married to the neck is a phenolic fingerboard, which is home to 24-frets that are adorned with custom position inlays - including a fetching "Annihilator Devil" on the 12th fret. The 12-inch radius is perfect for executing smooth string bends, as well as skipping between strings as you perform deft arpeggios at lightning speed. The neck and fingerboard combination is built with precision at the fore, encouraging you to let rip.
Epiphone ProBucker Humbucking Pickups
The Epiphone Limited Edition Jeff Waters Annihilation-II Flying V is equipped with a pair of ProBucker humbucking pickups - ProBucker 2 in the neck position, ProBucker 3 in the bridge position. The ProBuckers are designed using the same materials as the coveted Patent Applied For (PAF) pickups from classic late '50s Les Pauls. By employing nickel silver unit bases and covers, the pickups produce a much crisper and concentrated output for maximum power. The pickups are powered by sand-cast Alnico II magnets, which are bound with high quality conductor wire, and have been vacuum wax potted to reduce unwanted interference and noise - guaranteeing nothing but pure, unadulterated tones.
Control comes in the form of a master volume pot, as well as a master tone pot that also doubles up as a killswitch for creating staggered stuttering effects. The three-way pickup selector switch allows you to select either pickup independently, or both simultaneously for a huge output.
The Annihilation-II is Waters' weapon of choice on stage, and as such is fitted with road-ready hardware that is built to take all the abuse that comes with life on tour. Epiphone have installed Grover Roto-matic tuning machines with a super-strong 18:1 gear ratio - perfect for upholding drop-tunings with thicker string gauges, etc. Fitted to the body is a fixed tune-o-matic bridge with stopbar tailpiece, a partnership that provides a seamless connection between the strings and body to optimise intonation and sustain.
