The Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 USB Audio Interface is a 2 in/4 out USB audio interface that is compatible with both Mac and PC and houses two award-winning Focusrite pre-amps, all in a striking, red anodised aluminium unibody chassis, making it the ideal interface for DJs and travelling musicians to just plug-in and get recording.
The front of the interface presents two combo XLR inputs, which, being combo inputs, accommodate either XLR devices, such as microphones, or line-level devices, such as guitars and keyboards. This is also where those two award-winning mic preamps reside, offering a class-leading input stage.
Both of these channels are set up with their own their own Line/Instrument switches, illuminating Pad switches for loud guitars and mics, and Gain controls with colour-changing halos. The halos on the Gain controls change from green, to indicate a good level (above -24dBFS), through to red, which indicates that the signal is too loud and clipping will occur, so you can then adjust the gain. Simple.
The Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 USB Audio Interface also has MIDI IN and MIDI OUT ports at the rear, so that you can hook up synth modules or digital pianos.
It is at the back of the unit that you will find four high-quality RCA outputs, with a dynamic range of over 105dB, ready for you to connect to a DJ mixer, speakers or headphones. It is alongside these outputs that you can connect a set of monitor speakers and, using the direct control on the front panel, listen to your input and playback signals with low-latency. The sound coming though your monitors/headphones can be selected easily with the onboard switches and you can also chose between mono and stereo.
As previously mentioned, the Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 USB Audio Interface is compatible with both Mac and PC. The interface connects with a simple USB cable and the unit is bus-powered, so you don’t need an external supply. The interface’s included software, Scarlett plug-in suite, provides EQ, Compression, Gate and Reverb tools and is compatible with all major DAWs. If you don’t have digital audio workstation software already, you’ll find a code to unlock Ableton Live Lite 8 supplied in the box.
The Focusrite Red 2 and 3 plugins
These new plug-ins are accurate models of Focusrite’s renowned classics the Red 2 equaliser and Red 3 compressor units which are prized and renowned fixtures in professional recording studios the world over. Now, the Red 2 & Red 3 Plug-in Suite lets you exploit the famous natural sound of the originals conveniently from within your DAW of choice including Cubase, Ableton, Logic and Pro Tools.
The plug-ins faithfully reproduce the sonic qualities of the hardware. The Red 2 EQ is a sweet sounding 6-band design, with high/low pass filters,high/low frequency shelves, as well as fully parametric low-mid and high-mid frequency bands. The Red 3 compressor is a VCA compressor design, excellent for natural sounding dynamic control of drums, bass, vocals, and acoustic instruments.
