The Gibson 1965 J-45 Model Donovan Electro Acoustic in Cherry Sunburst delivers the model that the legendary folk/jazz/pop/psychedelica/world music artist cut his teeth on, and used to carve his long-standing music career with. Hailing from Scotland, Donovan has always done his own thing, making a few famous friends along the way - and allegedly teaching John Lennon guitar in the process - and what better instrument to forge your career with than a Gibson J-45. Known for its reliability, superb timbre, and comfortable playing feel, the J-45 is a guitar that any player would be proud to have in their arsenal, and its no wonder artists like Donovan have relied on theirs through thick and thin.
Powerful J-45 Body
The Gibson J-45 Model Donovan Electro Acoustic stays true to its roots, utilising the same '60s-style body radius that delivers a crisp, clean yet powerful timbre. The back and sides are crafted using mahogany, a rich tonewood that is revered thanks its exceptional warmth, which works perfectly with the J-45 body profile to produce a consistent yet mellow tone.
Paired with the back and sides is a beautiful Sitka spruce top, which is also beloved by guitar builders and luthiers thanks to its highly resonant character, which allows it to project the timbre generated within the body effortlessly, producing a wide dynamic range. Gibson have reinforced the top using scalloped X-bracing, preventing warping over extended periods of time, whilst allowing the soundboard to resonate fully. The top is finished in a divine cherry sunburst finish, which is treated with a thin natural cure nitrocellulose finish with textured matte appearance, staying true to the original model. To recreate the seamless transition between the woods, multi-ply binding has been applied to the top, and single-ply binding to the back. Completing the rich finish is a traditional double-ring rosette around the soundhole.
Solid Mahogany Neck
Continuing the accurate, vintage appointments, the body of the 1965 J-45 Donovan model is joined by a mahogany neck shaped to a modified rounded profile. The neck provides a substantial feel in the hand, without becoming cumbersome. Married to the neck is a luxurious rosewood fingerboard, with Gibson acoustic standard fret wire between each one of the 20 frets. Adorning each fret are 1/4-inch mother of pearl dot position inlays to guide your way in style. The 12-inch fingerboard radius lends itself beautifully to smooth and seamless string bends. At the top of the neck lies the traditional CF-100 headstock, which is angled to Gibson's customary 17-degree to improve string tension - aided directly by the bone nut.
The Gibson J-45 True Vintage Guitar’s headstock is outfitted with a set of 3-in-line white button tuners that boast an impressive 14:1 gear ratio. These beauties deliver precision tuning. With all moving parts cut for exact meshing, the chance of slippage is eliminated, while special lubricant has been applied to the gearbox, for smooth and accurate tuning adjustment.
The traditional belly up rosewood bridge works perfectly alongside the adjustable Tusq saddle to guarantee optimum intonation and string tension. The '50s-style tortoise pickguard protects the body around the underside of the soundhole. The guitar is equipped with Gibson Light Gauge strings that allow you to pick up and play immediately.
Taking to the stage is trouble-free thanks to the L.R. Baggs' Lyric preamp, so all that needs to be done is plug-in and play. Whether you're recording in the studio, playing to an intimate audience, or playing to a festival crowd, you can rest assured that the rich timbre of your J-45 will be translated transparently.
