The Gibson ES-335 is still perceived as one of the most esteemed electric guitars ever made. The design of the ES-335 enables the guitar to produce a range of both hollowbody and solidbody tones, giving you a versatile semi-acoustic electric. It was first released in 1958 and over the years it was customised and revamped by Gibson to appeal to new groups of different musicians of all genres. The 1963 model featured an updated body shape and a “block neck” rather than the previous “dot neck” of the late 50s. Many guitarists came to prefer the newer, 1963 version thanks to its incredible playing feel and sublime appearance.
CORRECT 63 PROFILE
Gibson have referred back to the very original specs of the 1963 model to reproduce it for the modern guitarist. A prominent feature of the 1963 guitar is that, compared to its preceding model, it developed narrower, more refined cutaway horns unlike the “Mickey Mouse ears”. The 1963 ES-335 also included a maple centreblock as per Ted McCarty’s approach, while the quartered Adirondack spruce bracing strengthened the body, and these original features are a part of the 2016 model, making it historically accurate.
Gibson use 3-ply maple / poplar / maple to construct the top, back and rims of the 2016 ES-335, and that maple centreblock offers a lighter feel. As per the build of the original model, the spruce braces and rims are applied to the guitar using hot hide glue. The 2016 1963 ES-335 has a Historic Burst colouring done with Hi Gloss 90 Sheen Lacquer which is then given the special V.O.S. treatment.
MAHOGANY “BLOCK” NECK
A one piece mahogany neck is fitted firmly to the body again using the hot hide glue just like the 1963 original, which gives it a strong, sturdy feel in your hand. The neck is built to the classic 1963 profile with a historic tubeless truss rod as this improves your overall sustain and intonation.
Aboard the neck is a 22-fret bound, rolled rosewood fingerboard with a smooth playing feel. The 1963 ES-335, contrary to the versions of the late 50s, carries a “block neck”, not a “dot neck”. Many guitarists actually prefer this look thanks to the period-correct celluloid block inlays guiding you along the frets. Gibson also ensure that the 2016 interpretation sticks with the precise specs for the fret wire to provide you with a vintage 1963 tone.
The ES-335 of 1963 was fitted with superb PAF (Patent Applied For) pickups with plenty of bite and tone. So, Gibson have stayed true to that sound by employing MHS Humbucker pickups for the 2016 ES-335. Powered by Alnico magnets and given unbalanced coil windings, the 2016 1963 ES-335 immediately produces a superb vintage tone just like the one first heard in the early 60s.
The 2016 1963 ES-335 has lead and rhythm volume and tone controls with matched 550k potentiometers, guaranteeing you that real vintage tone.
HARDWARE AND FINISH
To uphold tuning integrity, the 1963 headstock is fitted with Kluson Double Ring Tulip Button tuners with a precise 15:01 ratio. At the lower end of the body, a no wire ABR bridge is accompanied by a lightweight stop bar tailpiece which work together to hold a strong connection with each string and increase the overall sustain. A V.O.S. multi ply black ES-335 pickguard with a classic 45 degree bevel protects the body against scratches, while it complements the stunning Historic Burst finish.
The 1963 ES-335 is, without doubt, an amazing period-correct semi-hollow electric guitar to add to your collection. To keep its time-honoured look and sound in the best possible condition, Gibson supply a Memphis Gold-satin-lined Black hardcase and a Certificate of Authenticity.
