Gibson have rightly chosen to adhere to the exact design of the 1959 ES-335, and this Dot Plain Top reissue returns to the original roots of a true Gibson semi-hollowbody. Over 50 years later, Gibson Custom have reintroduced this well-revered model is back to become a worthwhile addition to the modern guitar collection.
When the ES-335 Dot model was first released in the late 1950s, it was an innovative and radical design for its time. This version maintains that very same construction, using 3-ply Maple / Poplar / Maple tonewood held together with Franklin Titebond 50 glue for a reliable build. The traditional semi-hollowbody design features a lightweight maple centre-block to prevent any unwanted noise or feedback. The body comes in the classic Gibson Vintage Sunburst finish and treated with a hi gloss lacquer for an added protective layer. This layer helps prevent unwanted or premature damage happening to the tonewood, allowing it to stand the test of time.
A quarter-sawn mahogany "dot" neck is firmly glued into the body of the ES-335 Dot Plain Top with a long tenon joint. The neck is shaped to the period-correct 1959 rounded profile for an immediately remarkable playing feel in your hand. Gibson Custom have topped the neck with a rosewood fingerboard, providing 22 frets to explore. The frets feature Mother of Pearl dot inlays to facilitate each fret transition.
CUSTOM SHOP PICKUPS
Gibson have equipped the 1959 ES-335 Dot Plain Top with Custom Bucker pickups to replicate that vintage 1959 sound. Alnico magnets are chosen to power each of the pickups in the neck and bridge positions to produce the ideal PAF-style tone. Custom Bucker pickups work wonderfully alongside the multiple tonewoods used in the build of the guitar to accurately translate their sound.
Controls for neck and bridge volume and tone are encased in gold top hat knobs, accompanied by a 3-way pickup toggle switch.
