The first Gibson Explorer models were initially brought out in 1958 as a futuristic and innovative guitar that stood out from the rest. They still remain a highly revered instrument and many people see the Explorer as a fantastic collector’s item. The 2016 Gibson Explorer is a modern manifestation of those original 50s models with a mixture of traditional and up-to-date features. The Gibson Explorer is a widely recognised guitar down to its asymmetrical, angled body, and the 2016 model is packed with premium, high performance attributes to pave the way for ambitious, new guitarists looking to be the next potential James Hetfield or Dave Grohl.
ASYMMETRICAL, ANGLED BODY
Following in Gibson style and tradition, the 2016 Explorer HP has a solid mahogany body with the quintessential asymmetrical, angled contours. Weighing in at approximately 4lbs, the 2016 Explorer feels relatively lightweight, making it ultimately comfortable to play whether you’re on stage or in the studio. Solid mahogany enables the 2016 Explorer to generate clear-cut lows and mids to warm highs all with plenty of sustain.
EXPLORER SLIMTAPER MAHOGANY NECK
Firmly joined to the solid mahogany angled body is an Explorer SlimTaper neck via a traditional Mortis and Tenon joint. The neck has a slightly larger surface due to its soloist width allowing much more room to play with, while the slim profile promotes a much quicker playability, thus making the 2016 Explorer very desirable for guitarists that enjoy faster-paced, complex solo work. The fast-access heel at the back of the neck is a new, innovative feature which makes fret transitions much easier too.
Aboard the single piece mahogany neck is a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard adorned with Mother of Pearl dot inlays to direct you along the frets with confidence.
At the top of the neck is an innovative titanium, adjustable zero-fret nut which couples exceptional sustain with outstanding resonance for a rich, full-bodied rock sound. The zero-fret nut also gives the neck and strings the fastest action to date, perfect for rock guitarists who play at break-neck speeds.
496R AND 500T PICKUPS
Gibson have employed two ceramic pickups for the 2016 Explorer in the 496R and 500T pickups. The 496R and 500T produce an incredibly high-gain output, and the 500T pickup in particular is one of Gibson’s highest gain pickups. The 496R has an aggressive output at the neck and is partnered by the 500T at the bridge, the ceramic magnets in each of these pickups generate a blistering lead sound full of tone and sustain.
At the lower end of the angled body are three control knobs, two for volume and one for master tone control. The pickup switch has a solid, sturdy feel and works quietly.
HARDWARE AND FINISH
The Gibson 2016 Explorer HP model is fitted with a chrome plated Tune-o-Matic bridge with titanium saddles and a traditional stopbar tailpiece. The titanium saddles further enhance the sustain and helps to produce a crystal clear, bright sound.
Fitted to the headstock are the next generation Gibson G-FORCE tuning machines with Mini Grover Kidney keys which allow you to retune your strings with ease thanks to the built-in servo motors in each key that detect the strings’ vibrations and alter the tuning accordingly. The G-FORCE machines work quietly even when used manually, and it has an easy-to-read lit up display at the back of the headstock so that you can even retune on a dark stage.
The Gibson 2016 Explorer is loaded with high performance, premium features whilst not missing out on all the classic attributes you would expect to see in a traditional Explorer, particularly its angled shape, solid mahogany build and pointed headstock. To keep your new axe protected from dirt and damage, Gibson have supplied a High Performance gig bag.
