In 1958 when Gibson first released the Flying V model, this was a guitar that was both modern and futuristic for its time period. Since then, it has become one of the most distinctive electric guitars in the world. The 2016 rendition of the Flying V is an up-to-date, contemporary version that takes all the classic attributes from the original while giving it a modern twist, paving the way for new and upcoming rock guitarists who aspire to be the next Kirk Hammett or Dave Davies.
DISTINCTIVE V SHAPE MAHOGANY BODY
In keeping with Gibson Flying V tradition, the 2016 high performance model is constructed entirely from mahogany tonewood. It retains that slender, V-shape body profile that is instantly recognisable among guitarists of all genres. The average weight of the 2016 Flying V body is around 3lbs, feeling nice and light thus making it really comfortable to play especially if you’re on stage.
SLIMTAPER MAHOGANY NECK
Securely fitted to the v-shape body via a traditional Mortis and Tenon joint is a single piece mahogany neck. Gibson have given the neck a slightly larger width with a soloist, SlimTaper profile. This gives the player a larger surface area to play with, while the SlimTaper figure of the neck promotes a faster playability, perfect for those who love to play complex rock solos up and down the frets at speed. This is further simplified with the new fast-heel neck heel at the back.
Married to the neck is a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard which is decorated with Mother of Pearl dot inlays to conduct your way up and down the frets with confidence.
At the top of the neck is an innovative titanium, zero-fret nut which couples exceptional sustain with outstanding resonance for a rich, full-bodied rock sound. The zero-fret nut also gives the neck and strings the fastest action to date, perfect for rock guitarists who play at break-neck speeds.
‘57 CLASSIC AND BURSTBUCKER 3 PICKUPS
Gibson have equipped the 2016 high performance Flying V with a combination of vintage PAF humbucking pickups, the ‘57 Classic and Burstbucker 3 pickups. Both pickups are powered by Alnico II magnets; the ‘57 Classic has balanced coils while the Burstbucker 3 has an overwound design, so putting the two together generates an incredibly powerful rock output, whether you’re looking to create a heavy metal sound or a crunchy blues sound.
To the lower bout of the Flying V body are three amber top hat knobs, two for volume and one for master tone control. The three way pickup switch has a new, high-tech feel and is exceptionally quiet when you flick between pickups.
HARDWARE AND FINISH
The Gibson 2016 Flying V HP model is fitted with a chrome plated Tune-o-Matic bridge with titanium saddles and a traditional stopbar tailpiece. The titanium saddles further enhance the sustain and helps to produce a crystal clear, bright sound.
Fitted to the headstock are the next generation Gibson G-FORCE tuning machines with Grover Green keys which allow you to retune your strings with ease thanks to the built-in servo motors in each key that detect the strings’ vibrations and alter the tuning accordingly. The G-FORCE machines work quietly even when used manually, and it has an easy-to-read lit up display at the back of the headstock so that you can even retune on a dark stage.
The Gibson 2016 Flying V is loaded with top quality, premium high performance features that draws on influences from the early 1958 models but with an added modern twist. To protect your new Gibson from dirt and damage whether in storage or on the road, Gibson have supplied a High Performance hardcase.
