Gibson have been developing and building high caliber guitars for over six decades, with the original Gibson SG being released in 1961. The 2016 SG Special Faded model is a high performance instrument packed with premium features that gives the traditional SG Faded a brand new twist. Since its initial creation, the Gibson SG guitar has been an instrument of choice for many iconic guitarists, from Angus Young of AC/DC to Eric Clapton.
Like many Gibson electric guitars, they have employed a crucial blend of a maple body and a mahogany neck to construct this SG Special Faded HP model. The body is carved from solid maple and given a slim chassis with the traditional, asymmetrical double-cutaway. The tonewood in the body of the 2016 SG Special Faded essentially gives this guitar that thick, raw vintage tone that is expected of the SG.
SLIM MAHOGANY NECK
The 2016 SG Faded High Performance still has the slim neck profile and is constructed using a single piece of mahogany. The soloist neck width has a slightly larger scope than previous models, but is potentially the best neck yet for guitarists who like ripping out exquisite solos. To make solos even easier, the neck is given a worn satin finish and has a brand new neck heel which promotes rapid note transition.
Married to the neck is a thicker, rounded 22-fret rosewood fingerboard which has a sumptuous playing feel. The frets are adorned with white dot inlays to guide you along the frets with confidence.
At the top of the neck is an adjustable nut angle whereby you can adjust your string height to suit your style ensuring that you feel ultimately comfortable and can play on for hours.
VINTAGE PICKUPS IN THE MODERN DAY
That sweet, raw and blistering sound output we know from the SG Special is replicated in this 2016 SG Faded High Performance model as Gibson have fitted it with two PAF (patent applied for) humbucker pickups, the 490R and 498T, both powered by Alnico II magnets. The 490R (neck) and 498T (bridge) pickups allow you to generate anything from rich, warm rhythm tones to fiery leads. The machine wound coils produce a big bite and create a perfect hard rock sound.
Four control knobs sit to the lower bout of the guitar for: lead volume, lead tone, rhythm volume and rhythm tone, and a three-way pickup switch allows you to adjust your sound to suit your playing needs.
HARDWARE AND FINISH
The 2016 SG Special Faded HP is equipped with a chrome plated Tune-o-Matic bridge with titanium saddles and traditional stopbar tailpiece.
Fitted to the headstock are the next generation Gibson G-FORCE tuning machines which allow you to retune your strings with pure simplicity thanks to the built-in servo motors in each key that detect the strings’ vibrations and alter the tuning accordingly. The G-FORCE machines work quietly even when used manually, and it has an easy-to-read lit up display at the back of the headstock so that you can even retune on a dark stage.
The Gibson 2016 SG Special Faded High Performance electric guitar does as the title suggests, producing a truly high performance all-round rock tone right from the off. To help shelter your new axe when on the road or in storage, Gibson include a High Performance gig bag to keep your guitar protected.
