For guitar lovers and collectors all over the world, the Gibson 1957 Les Paul with a goldtop is still very in demand. Its luxurious appearance and compelling sound make it one of the finest electric guitars ever made. Almost 60 years on, and Gibson Custom have rolled out a modern take on this classic guitar in the form of the 2016 Standard Historic 1957 Les Paul, and not to mention that it of course has that distinct Goldtop as well as a dark back in contrast.
MAPLE AND MAHOGANY
Standard practice in the design of Les Pauls in the late 50s always meant that they had to have a two-piece maple top. The 2016 Standard Historic 1957 Les Paul as expected is given a two-piece plain maple top which takes on the gloss, goldtop finish really smoothly.
Solid mahogany is used in the construction of the body and has been hand-chosen by the luthiers themselves at Gibson Custom to ensure the guitar has a lightweight, comfortable feel. To make it feel like a true 1957 model, the guitar body has a 1950s style Les Paul body contour with no weight relief.
The 2016 Standard Historic 1957 Les Paul is fitted with a single-piece mahogany neck and naturally it had to have the 1950s style Les Paul neck profile. To give it that strong, durable build, Gibson used hot hide-glue to join the neck to the body and this is also a significant part of what contributes to a Les Paul's vintage tone. The neck also has a historic long neck tenon which enhances the sustain and sonority of the guitar.
Accompanying the neck is a one-piece fingerboard crafted from solid Indian rosewood which offers a slick playing surface. It has 22 frets for you to explore and the cellulose trapezoid inlays do not only decorate the frets, but they also direct you along.
CUSTOM BUCKER PICKUPS
At Gibson Custom shop, much research has been done into recreating the first PAF humbucker pickups which would have been found on an original 1957 model. The 2016 Standard Historic Les Paul features PAF-style Custom Bucker pickups which accurately achieve that wonderful, well-known late 50s sound whether its from the neck or bridge pickup.
To help you control the rhythm and lead pickups, the guitar is fitted with two Volume and two Tone pots with matched 500k potentiometers and encased with gold top hats.
HARDWARE AND FINISH
An ABR bridge with thumbwheels is joined by a lightweight, reissue aluminium stopbar tailpiece for a much better sustain than the likes of a heavier alloy tailpiece. The headstock is also fitted with reissue Kluson deluxe green keys made with nickel plated stamped steel, enabling incredible tuning precision.
The guitar is equipped with a protective 1950s style cream pickguard, ensuring the body immediately below the strings doesn't become scratched, thus allowing you to preserve that beautiful 1957 Goldtop.
The Les Paul Goldtop has been a true classic in the history of Gibson guitars, and this 2016 remake of a 1957 legend is not to be missed out on.
