Created with Billie Joe Armstrong of punk legends Green Day, the Gibson Memphis Billie Joe Armstrong ES-137 is a well-equipped workhorse, ready for anything you can throw at it.
The cutting and distinctive voice of this guitar is largely due to the two Memphis P90 single coil pickups. Larger than a standard single coil, these pickups have become one of Billie Joe Armstrong's favourites thanks to the tone that they produce. The two pickups are routed through simplified yet effective controls designed by Billie Joe, consisting of two volume knobs and a 3-way rotary switch for pickup selection. Snappy when clean but very capable of cutting, overdriven tones, these are the ideal pickups for a rock band such as Green Day.
The Gibson Billie Joe Armstrong ES-137 has been constructed with great respect to the iconic vintage Gibsons of yesteryear whilst also being sympathetic to the modern players requirements. This is first seen in the choice of body shape, the ES-137. This relatively new shape, first seen in 2002, is a combination of several other Gibson models including the ES-175, ES-135 and ES-335. By taking a shape usually used for completely hollow guitars, making it notably thinner and adding a center block (to help eliminate feedback) Gibson have created a semi-hollow guitar perfect for the modern rock guitarist.
The 3-piece maple/poplar/maple/ body is made using the original presses at the Gibson Memphis facility ensuring solid construction using a tried-and-tested material choice. Partner this with a rosewood fingerboard adorned with traditional trapezoid inlays and you have a seriously great rock guitar with a sophisticated attire.
