Carlton is a highly regarded musician who has not only lent his skills to others, but has pushed the envelope with his solo releases too. Though his playing style may evolve, one constant remains - his 1968 Gibson ES-335.
Classic ES-335 Design
The Gibson ES-335 is renowned for its superb tonal versatility, with an impressive energy that channels a vibrant warmth. The semi-hollowbody design with open chambered construction, allows the laminated maple body to work its magic to generate a lush, textured timbre with an elegant power. Franklin Titebond 50 adhesive secures the integrity of the body, whilst deftly carved F-holes allow the timbre to project the acoustic energy through the body top. In keeping with the original, the body has been finished in a cool vintage sunburst, evoking a classic visual aesthetic.
Sturdy Mahogany Neck
Fitted to the body of the Larry Carlton ES-335 is a single-piece mahogany neck, which is shaped to the 1960s slim taper profile to encourage a fast playing feel. The standard 24.75-inch scale length provides a generous playing area to roam around in. Married to the neck is a responsive 22-fret rosewood fingerboard, which is decorated with small pearloid block position inlays to aid in your navigation across the neck. The double cutaway body profile makes it very easy to reach the neck in its entirety, whilst the cream fingerboard binding assures that your transitions between frets is as smooth as can be.
'57 Classic Pickups
The Gibson Larry Carlton Signature ES-335 Guitar is fitted with a pair of '57 Classic humbuckers. The '57s are made using Alnico II magnets, wound with vintage enamel-coated wire, nickel-plated pole pieces and two-conductor braided wiring - an exquisitely designed combination that makes the pickups incredibly powerful, yet incredibly smooth. The pickups closely model the revered PAFs they're modelled on, perfectly articulating the complex tonal character produced by the tonewoods and semi-hollowbody design. The resonant properties of the semi-hollow shape allow the body to generate a huge amount of sustain and power, with emphasis on a robust mid to low-end clout. The '57s allow you to project that timbre whilst ensuring the upper frequencies are catered to in the process, giving the ES-335 a well-rounded character.
The body is equipped with a Nashville tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece to optimise intonation and sustain across each string. Fitted to the headstock are Schaller M6 tuning machines, which work tirelessly to keep each and every string held securely and poised for smooth adjustment. The truss rod cover bears the trademark "Mr. 335" inlay.
