The original model, from which the Gibson Memphis 1952 ES-295 VOS 2015 takes its leave, is one of those important, though oft-overlooked, instruments that set the foundations for rock’n’roll.
Of course, this modern day equivalent aims to replicate this guitar but updates it through modern-day materials and manufacturing techniques, to give you the best possible iteration. The result is an instrument that provides a vintage-certified look, playing feel, and tone; with its ‘60s Cherry finish, VOS treatment, traditional ‘bail’ tailpiece, and pair of MHS P-90 pickups.
Perfectly Aged Aesthetics
Constructed in the ES-175 style, the body of the Gibson Memphis 1952 ES 295 VOS 2015 is fully hollow and is made up of a 3-ply (maple/poplar/maple) composite, which, with its traditional f-holes and a pointed Florentine cutaway, makes it perfect for not only rock ‘n’ roll but jazz, country, and blues.
Although hollow, you don’t need to worry about strength, as the arched top is supported by historic spruce braces. Leaving you to enjoy the body’s ‘60s Cherry VOS finish, which gives it a gently aged look, and is emphasised by a vintage-cream binding and a clear pickguard that is back-painted with a period-correct floral graphic.
Solid Playability and Sustain
Glued into the body is a mahogany neck, carved to a soft C shape and accompanied by a bound dark rosewood fingerboard. The fingerboard, measuring 12-inches in radius, has been outfitted with 19 frets and aged cellulose split-parallelogram inlays, giving an elegant look. This leads up to the headstock, which has been set to 17 degrees and outfitted with a set of Kluson single ring tulip buttons. It has also been inlaid with a traditional mother-of-pearl crown.
The period correct features continued at the other end of the Gibson Memphis 1952 ES295 with a trapeze bridge with wraparound bar; giving the weight and sustain required for rock. The Bail tailpiece has also resurfaced for the instrument; an appointment that is known for its solidity and sustain.
A Pair of MHS P-90 Pickups
There could be no other pickup pairing in the construction of this rock legend, so a pair of MHS P-90 pickups have been fitted, for their hot but chunky tone. These are made up of Alinco III rod magnets and 42 plain wire, to give all the smooth and guttural roar you could want, while VOS ABS Cream soap bar covers show their softer side.
The pickups are controlled by the usual offering of independent volume and tone control knobs, which in this case are present with gold speed knobs, and a three-way Switchcraft toggle switch.
