The Gibson Memphis 1954 ES-175D Electric Guitar in Jim Dickinson Burst delivers the sublime character of the late music legend's own ES-175 - the same model his son Jim Dickinson modelled his own Gibson signature ES-335 on (alongside his ES-330). Originally released in 1949, the Gibson ES-175 combined the luxurious timbre of an archtop and the ability to be played via an amplifier, opening the door for players to lift themselves above ensembles and allowing soloists to flourish. This rendition of the 1954 model has some mouth-watering appointments that make is truly special - and limited to only 50 models worldwide, you'll need to act quickly to avoid disappointment.
The ES-175's archtop body is crafted using 3-ply vintage maple/poplar/maple for the top, back and sides. Though the tonewood is solid, its supple character makes it highly resonant, and empowers this beauty by enabling it to generate an enviable tonal palette. Reinforcement comes in the form of quartered Adirondack spruce bracing, providing longevity and vitality to this wondrous model throughout its lifetime. The hollowbody design produces a substantial energy with fantastic projection. Along the top and back, tan binding creates a harmonious link between the woods, whilst complementing the heavenly "Jim Dickinson Burst" finish. As well as the gently impressed F-holes, protection is afforded to the body thanks to the multi-ply black ES-175 pickguard, with 45-degree bevel.
The neck is crafted from a single-piece of solid mahogany, which is shaped to a soft "C" profile that makes it a joy to perform with. Rolled neck binding creates seamless transitions along the entire length of the neck, so even the most complex of passages can be executed without breaking a sweat. Paired with the neck is a delightful single-piece rosewood fingerboard, which is home to 19-frets that are adorned with split parallelogram position inlays to guide your way in style. The fingerboard is set to a 12-inch radius, perfect for executing smooth string bends and allowing the fingers to roll around its playing surface perfectly.
MHS P-90 pickups
The Gibson Memphis team have designed Memphis Historic Spec (MHS) P-90 pickups to emulate the sophisticated tones of Dickinson's own model. Dutiful consideration has been afforded to guaranteeing the unique timbre of each model is given the ability to shine, whilst retaining that characteristic ES-175 tone.
Each pickup is controlled using individual volume and tone controls, which are represented by vintage original spec (V.O.S.) gold speed knobs. Switching between pickups is controlled using the 3-way pickup selector, so you can either operate either pickup independently, or both simultaneously. Precise tone control is yours for the taking.
The headstock proudly displays a mother-of-pearl Gibson logo and crown inlay. The task of upholding tuning integrity with style and precision falls upon the reliable shoulders of the vintage-style Kluson single ring tulip button tuners. The response of the tuners makes it incredibly easy to adjust strings on the fly, but the 15:1 gear ratio guarantees absolute stability.
After passing over the nylon nut, the strings meet the body via the bridge with compensated top and rosewood base, and the three diamond tailpiece. The hardware setup not only adheres deliberately to the original spec, but is designed to optimise intonation and sustain.
To offer the protection that the 1954 ES-175D Jim Dickinson Burst model deserves, Gibson Memphis has included a period correct tan and pink hardshell case. No matter where your music takes you, rest assured that your pride and joy is safe from harm in the most luxurious fashion.
