The Gibson 1963 ES-335TD Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar in Sixties Cherry adheres very closely to the coveted early 1960s model's construction and playing feel. The team at Gibson Memphis has gone to great lengths to recreate the revered tonal characteristics of Patent Applied For (PAF) pickups with their Memphis Historic Spec (MHS) pickups. If you're looking for vintage charm with modern build reliability, then this 2015 Gibson Memphis model is exactly what you're looking for.
Classic ES-335 Body
The body of the Gibson ES-335 is shaped to the exquisite semi-hollow shape with slim taper cutaways for easy access to the upper frets. The delightful body shape is crafted using 3-ply maple/poplar/maple, which is held together using Franklin Titebond 50 adhesive. Not only does this ensure a stable and resilient feel, but also allows the woods to resonate with absolute freedom. Combine the woods' ability to resonate freely with the semi-hollow design, and you are a guaranteed a powerful timbre that is saturated with an enveloping warmth.
The Sixties Cherry model takes its visual cue from the early '60s model, recreating its opulent finish that is protected and preserved by smooth hi-gloss 90sheen lacquer that is completed in vintage original spec (V.O.S.).
Single-Piece Mahogany Neck
Joined to the body of the Gibson ES-335TDC electric guitar is a single-piece mahogany neck that is shaped to the historic 1963 profile - again fitted and secured using Franklin Titebond 50 adhesive. Paired with the neck is a 22-fret dark rosewood fingerboard, which is adorned with period-correct celluloid block position inlays. Rolled neck binding rounds off the edges of each fret, guaranteeing smoother transitions along the fretboard, and enriching the playing experience.
Sturdy and Responsive Hardware
The headstock is set to the customary 17-degree angle that Gibson employ across several ranges of their models, which contributes to the guitar's exceptional sustain, tuning integrity and uniform string tension. The classic mother-of-pearl Crown inlay and "Gibson" logo sit between the Kluson double-ring tuning machines that feature a stamped steel body with plastic tulip buttons. Their impressive 15:1 gear ratio secures strings to uphold tuning integrity with absolute precision. Of course, we can't forget the classic black and white bell-shaped truss rod cover with engraved F-hole.
Fitted to the body is the resilient partnership of a No-Wire ABR V.O.S. nickel-plated, die-cast alloy bridge, and V.O.S. nickel-plated aluminium lightweight stop bar tailpiece. The bridge and tailpiece work together to secure strings and create a harmonious connection with the body, allowing the sustain and string resonance to ring out truly for as long as possible.
In order to recreate the hallowed tones of PAF pickups, the MHS humbuckers were brought to life. The neck pickup is powered by an Alnico III magnet, offering a fat and chunky tonal output that is flooded with the warmth produced by the body. The bridge pickup is powered by an Alnico II magnet, offering a little sizzle that breaks up when given a push of overdrive. Enamel wiring is scatter wound to ensure each model develops its own unique character over time, ensuring that the more you play and push these beauties, the more you're making your ES-335 truly yours.
The team at Gibson Memphis created a thing of beauty with their ES-335 Electric Guitar in Sixties Cherry, and each model comes with a Gibson Memphis period correct black and yellow hardshell case, and certificate of authenticity.
