The Gibson Memphis ES-339 Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar in Sunset Burst is the 2015 model that boasts a host of improvements that makes this beloved model better than ever before. For those who covet the ES-335 tone but find the large body cumbersome to wield, then the ES-339 is a dream come true. Not only does it produce the rich timbre of the iconic semi-hollowbody ES-335, but it has smaller proportions - closer to that of another legendary model the Les Paul - that makes it much easier to perform with.
Classic Semi-Hollowbody Design
The body of the Gibson ES-339 is built to the classic double-cutaway ES semi-hollowbody shape, with an internal chamber that allows this beauty to generate rich warmth that drips with sophistication. A 3-ply maple/poplar/maple tonewood combination has a natural resonance that suits the semi-hollowbody design. Holding everything together firmly is Franklin Titebond 50 adhesive, ensuring a sturdy finish without restricting the resonant capabilities of the tonewoods. Stylish F-holes adorn the body top, whilst smooth cream binding ties the top, sides, and back together seamlessly.
This particular model has been treated to a visually breath-taking sunset burst, which is evocative of the style of classic models - merging old and new to perfection. The finish is protected by a coating of smooth hi-gloss 90 sheen lacquer.
Single-Piece Mahogany Neck
Joined to the body of the Gibson ES339 Electric Guitar is a sweetly crafted neck shaped from a single piece of quarter-sawn mahogany, and carved to a traditional "C" profile. This profile incorporates the thinner necks of the early ’60s, but redesigned dimensions such as added thickness to the peghead transition ensure greater strength and stability. Paired with the neck is a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard, which is adorned with pearloid block position inlays. Rolled neck binding rounds off the edges of each fret, guaranteeing smoother transitions along the fretboard, and enriching the playing experience.
Sturdy and Responsive Hardware
The headstock is set to the customary 17-degree angle that Gibson employ across several ranges of their models, which contributes to the guitar's exceptional sustain, tuning integrity and uniform string tension. The classic mother-of-pearl Crown inlay and "Gibson" logo sit between the Milk Bottle Grover Rotomatic tuning machines with impressive 18:1 gear ratio with synchronised spur gear system. Of course, we can't forget the classic black and white bell-shaped truss rod cover with engraved F-hole.
Fitted to the body is the resilient partnership of Tone Pro AVR-2 nickel-plated die-cast alloy bridge, and nickel-plated die-cast zinc locking stop bar tailpiece. The bridge and tailpiece work together to secure strings and create a harmonious connection with the body, allowing the sustain and string resonance to ring out truly for as long as possible.
The Gibson ES-339 Electric Guitar has been loaded up with two legendary pickups, in the form of the Burstbucker 1 and 2 humbucking pickups; ready to supply heralded “PAF”-style tone. Set in the neck, the Burstbucker 1 pickup provides great depth and definition, great for mellow jazz, and crisp blues-lead work. Switch to the Burstbucker 2 in the bridge and the Gibson ES 339 Electric Guitar offers biting twang and sharp rock tones, throw it through an overdrive pedal and a tube amplifier and achieve tonal perfection in no time.
The team at Gibson Memphis have outdone themselves with the ES-339 Electric Guitar in Sunset Burst, and if the guitar itself isn't awesome enough, it even comes with a Gibson Memphis tan hardshell case and certificate of authenticity.
