Details

At this price this little gem is an absolute bargain. But who is Jim Dandy, and why is his name on the headstock? When you consider that the Gretsch G9500 is a decent parlour and under £200, do you really care? Part of the Roots Collection, this model brings ‘30s, '40s and '50s artistry back into the modern domain with its true-to-era Gretsch "Rex" parlour design, at a price that’ll make it more than a little attractive to beginners and seasoned pros alike.

The small-bodied parlour shape has always had its fans, and has always been particular popular with players of Delta blues and country music, but it recently it seems to have a gained a resurgence with players of other genres, and rightfully so. The parlour shape brings offers more than its stunted size would initially indicate, with a loud voice and high projection omitting from the shrunken instrument, whilst also being highly manageable for players who prefer smaller instruments, or children learning to play.

For those looking to get down to the exact technical specs you’re looking at a 24" (610 mm) scale length, 18" (457 mm) body length, 9.5" (241 mm) upper bout body width, and 13" (330 mm) lower bout body width.

The whole of the body (top, back, sides) of the Gretsch G9500 Jim Dandy Flat Top is crafted from agathis and is structurally-strengthened with an X bracing. A low-cost alternative to maple, agathis provides many of the same tonal qualities, with a well balance sound across the sonic range. This is finished in an elegant and beautifully understated barn wood burst semi-gloss, enhanced by a white binding and soundhole rosette, and a single-ply white pickguard with “G” graphic.

Meeting the body is a nato neck that has been reinforced with steel; ensuring the guitar’s ability as the perfect travel companion. This employs a “C” shape profile, giving a comfortable playing surface along with the 18-fret rosewood fingerboard, which measures 12” in radius and is styled out with pearloid dot inlays.

Finished in the same Vintage Sunburst semi-gloss as the body, the neck leads onto a 1950's Gretsch 3-a-side headstock, sporting white button nickel-plated open-gear die-cast tuners and ‘Gretsch’ and ‘Jim Dandy’ logos, while the other end of the neck culminates in a rosewood top-load bridge with a compensated PPS saddle.
