The fourth iteration of this surprisingly easy to use but exceptionally powerful tool, iZotope RX 4 is often described as the ‘Photoshop of audio’, due to its visual approach to audio repair and restoration. A standalone package that comes supplied with a host of modules, this software will stop you from binning great takes just because of their audio issues.
iZotope RX4 is an amazing tool. It’s easy to use, it’s very powerful, and it will cause you to never look at problematic audio the same way again.- Chris Monlux (videomaker.com)
A Colourful Look at your Audio
Although software engineers are very used to looking at and analysing waveforms, iZotope RX 4 takes this further with its Spectrogram display, which is the centrepiece of the software. Although it may at first seem odd, this editor displays frequency and amplitude as various patches of colour overlaid on top of your waveforms. This way of working gives you a very exact representation of what is happening with your audio.
Hum and Noise - Gone
Inconsistent audio can be levelled easily with the software’s none-destructive, Clip Gain feature, which allows for anything between 36dB of gain, to absolute silence.
Taken from iZotope RX 3 Advanced, the Dialogue Denoiser module can quickly and easily remove even high levels of ambient noise from vocal recordings, without affecting the vocal focus. It’s for field recordings of speech that iZotope RX 4 excels, cleaning up unwanted interruptions and environmental sounds.
The capability of iZotope RX 4 to removed background hum, with its Remove Hum module is poetry in motion. Users of the software can identify background hum via the spectrogram and use this module to simply sample a part of it, and the software will remove it from the whole audio, following it with the new Adaptive mode, which tracks the sound if it alters across the recording.
Although a standalone plug-in in its own right, iZotope RX 4 now offers integration with your DAW, with options to transmit audio one way or both ways, depending whether you want to use the software for analysis-only or for processing and editing. Additionally the software’s output can now be routed through DAWs that previously wouldn’t share the audio’s hardware.
