The legend returns, in a compact package!
As the name suggests, the Korg MS-20 mini is a true, mini-sized recreation of the of the original 1978 model. Overseen by the original engineers of the MS 20, this mini-replica has been painstakingly built to faithfully reproduce the original sound of its much older brother. When parts needed to be replaced with a more modern counterpart, the engineers carefully listened to hit the exact sound of the original. Basically, the sound you get with the MS 20 mini is that of a brand new MS 20.
All the original magic has been given some modern enhancements. Less noise is produced for a cleaner signal and there’s the addition of MIDI in and USB-MIDI that can transmit and receive note messages, you can even connect the MS20 mini to your computer and play it from a sequencer. The patch bay has been reduced in size to mini-plug jacks and the knobs and printing has been reduced, in all the MS-20 is 86% the size of the original. The packaging, settings chart and manual have even been replicated so you can experience the excitement of the MS20 just as it was in 1978.
In true experimental spirit, the MS20 allows you to use the pitch or volume of an external audio source to control the synth. For example, you can input an electric guitar and use the MS20 mini as a guitar synthesizer, input a mic, and you can use it as a vocal synth for some truly inspiring results. The patching bay system allows you to make complex sounds that are only limited by your imagination, and there is a flow chart printed on the panel so even the beginner can take advantage of the possible combinations straight away.
One of the most memorable characteristics of the MS-20 was its powerful filters which provide resonance on both the high-pass and low-pass. Maximizing resonance would cause the filter to self-oscillate producing dramatic tones, many of which can be heard on popular songs over the last 3 decades. The MS-20 mini is a staggeringly accurate replica of the original legend from the 70’s, massive in sound, small in size and price, made available for a new generation to enjoy.

Amazing sound creator

I've had access to one of these since they came out, but finally bought one approx 3 months ago, and I have to say it's one of the best purchases I've made for the studio. The pallets of sounds that you can get from this machine is vast! Whether you need fat or thin basses or leads, with the filtering available it's in there. Once you get onto the semi-modular section, the blips, beeps and sweeps are unrivaled unless you start trying to buy vintage and spend over a grand. If you're in the market, go for this, I'm glad I did.
