For over 175 years, Martin has built a reputation for building some of the finest instruments in the world, used by top artists and highly sought after by avid players. The Martin GPCPA5 Performing Artist Electro Acoustic Guitar is no exception to this tradition and is designed for those who are looking for a more affordable Martin model, whether it is for practising at home or gigging with too.

The top is built from solid sitka spruce, a North American tonewood that is a popular choice in the construction of high-end acoustic guitars. Sitka spruce has the enviable combination of resilience, strength and elasticity, which gives the guitar a range of diverse tonal qualities from deep Lows, through warm mids to crisp highs. The top is reinforced using Martin’s hybrid “X” scalloped bracing technique, giving further strength to prevent any chance of buckling over time as well as giving a very secure feel to the body.

The back and sides of the guitar are built from mahogany, a naturally dense and warm sounding wood that reinforces the mid to low range frequency output of the guitar.

The neck is cut to the Performing Artist Profile and is made from stratabond, a dye impregnated wood veneer that has long been used to form the stocks and handles of guns and bows, but has now been utilised by Martin due for their guitar necks due to its excellent durability and strength.

As an alternative to traditional rosewood or ebony, the fingerboard is made from black richlite. This is a lightweight composite material that is held in high regard due to its incredible strength, which furthers the integrity of the neck.

The neck has a generous 25.4” scale length, which is home to 20 very playable frets. The fingerboard width at the nut is 1-3/4” extending to 2-1/8” at the 12th fret, giving a very comfortable surface. Coupled with the cutaway at the 14th fret, the entire length of the fingerboard can be reached with easy access to all frets.

The GPCPA5 is fitted with the Fishman F1 analog electronics system, which contains an onboard chromatic tuner, a tone adjustment control, a volume control switch and phase control.

The tone control can be attenuated to help deliver a thicker or punchier sound, help drop out the midrange when finger-picking and add more depth and clever for times when you want to strum hard.

The Fishman F1 also comes with a phase control, which can be used to improve bass response at low volume and suppress feedback at high volume.

The guitar is finished to Martin’s exceedingly high standards with white corian used at the nut, white ABS offset dots for the fret inlays, a black richlite bridge and delmar tortoise coloured pickguard.

Customer Reviews
Posted on 12/04/2015 by welsh_tornado This is the best acoustic I've played in a while! It's a versatile guitar that can be used to play various styles from full on strumming to finger-picking and fine finger-style pieces. The Martin GPCPA5 sounds fantastic live on stage plugged in through a simple DI box straight to the mixer as the on-board pick-up does all the hard work when finding the sound for the venue. In the studio it's easy to mic this guitar up using two condenser mics, one by the sound-hole and the other by the fretboard, not very far from the sound-hole. The size of this martin is ideal for touring as it is lightweight and fits in a standard Hiscox case, making it easy to store. I would recommend using a DI Box to balance the sound and if you feel that the on-board pickup isn't enough, it also sounds great through a pre-amp system such as the LR Baggs pedal. As it's a Martin guitar it's nothing but quality, and I would recommend this guitar to a person that's looking for a reliable guitar that plays beautifully. A must have for any acoustic player!
