When you pick up the new OM-28E electro acoustic guitar it feels just like being handed a well-looked after vintage Martin thanks to some of the time-honoured appointments, from its classic Orchestra body to the slightly aged natural finish. For over 180 years, Martin remains one of the world’s finest and most respected guitar-making brands, and they produce instruments of incomparable quality year after year. The blend of exceptional materials combined with the unprecedented craftsmanship of the luthiers contribute to the warm, indulgent acoustic timbre of the OM-28E orchestra model which recalls some of the character seen and heard in prewar Martin instruments.
From the late 1920s, Martin designed a collection of 14-fret guitars which had a modified shape that incorporated the 000 body shape with a long scale neck, solid headstock and set measurements that were used for the bridge and nut width and these became known as Orchestra Models. The OM-28E has a retro orchestra dreadnought build with a mixture of modern and vintage features to make for an exclusively outstanding model.
The OM-28E Retro has a solid sitka spruce top that partners elegantly with the orchestra dreadnought body. Over the years, Martin have developed a range of different bracing patterns which each have their own unique effects on the feel and sound of the guitar. The OM-28E Retro has standard “X” scalloped bracing beneath the solid sitka spruce body top to help reduce some of the weight which subsequently allows the guitar to vibrate freely when played, thus improving the overall tone.
Solid East Indian rosewood is used to make up the back and sides of the OM-28E and it creates a sparkling, sizzling sound but is also chosen thanks to its resilience. The partnership of East Indian rosewood and a solid sitka spruce top enables the DCPA4 to generate a consistently vintage acoustic tone.
PERFORMING ARTIST NECK
A select hardwood neck with a modified low oval profile is securely joined by means of a dovetail joint. The neck has a Performing Artist taper, which gives it a significantly slimmer feel and a close action which is optimal for guitarists who enjoy a quicker progression along the frets, and improves the overall playability for fingerstyle players.
Married to the slim neck is a solid black ebony fingerboard which has 20 frets, and 14 of these are open so you can gain an easier access to the upper frets. To conduct you, Martin have decorated the neck with diamond and square position inlays so you can glide along the fretboard with confidence.
FISHMAN F1 AURA PLUS ELECTRONICS
The OM-28E is fitted with the extraordinary Fishman F1 Aura Plus preamp system, which has the ability to simulate the sound of nine different types of first-rate studio microphones. It has a menu style interface which is easy to navigate thanks to the controls being suitably placed on the top side of the guitar, so you can alter your sound output to suit your playing needs whether on stage or in the recording studio. You can increase the volume on this preamp using one simple button but the anti-feedback filter ensures that any potential feedback is cut out. With just two, well-positioned button controls this preamp is simple to use, and it has a bright LED display so you can easily read the settings.
The Fishman F1 Aura Plus preamp also includes a built-in tuner so you can retune your strings wherever you are.
HARDWARE AND FINISH
To uphold tuning integrity with precision, Martin have fitted nickel open geared tuning machines with butterbean knobs to the headstock. The 1930s style belly style bridge is constructed from solid black ebony and it holds a firm connection between the body and the strings so that you can play on for hours with confidence.
The soundhole is decorated with a Style 28 rosette and a tortoise colour pickguard which protects the soundboard from scratches while also giving the guitar a neat finish. The back of the body features HD zig-zag purfling that blends in beautifully with the solid East Indian rosewood back and sides.
The Martin OM-28E Retro Series combines that wonderfully vintage feel and appearance reminiscent of some of the early pre-war Martin Orchestra models while incorporating some premium, modern features. It has a stunning natural gloss finish with an aging toner to give it that preserved look. Martin have also included a guitar case with the OM-28E Retro so you can keep it in tip-top shape for many years to come.
