Based on the award-winning Philosopher’s Tone’s compressor, the Pigtronix Philosophers Rock offers the same transparent compression and clean, unending sustain but in a more compact and simplified unit.

Compact and More
The Pigtronix Philosophers Rock Guitar Effects Pedal isn’t simply a compact version of the Philosopher’s Tone, don’t be fooled into thinking it is lesser, as there is more going on than you may first suspect. Of course, to squeeze in such complex electronics and still deliver the same all-analog, state-of-the-art dynamics processing, this pedal has fewer controls but as well as gaining in pedalboard real estate, you also gain with the unit’s harmonically-rich germanium distortion.
Activated with the simple Grit mini-toggle, and tone-shaping control still governed by the pedal’s Sustain rotary control (alongside the Volume knob), you can move quickly between light and face-melting distortion, with characteristics similar to the coveted rectifier sag achieved through overloading small tube amplifiers. It is for this reason that the Pigtronix Philosopher’s Rock Guitar Pedal is especially favoured by slide guitarists.
Stripped Back Sweetness
If you’re an obsessive knob twiddler, then this is not for you. If you’re interested in pure tonality then stay right where you are, as what the Pigtronix Philosophers Rock may lack in controls it more than makes up for in tone. It actually boasts a range of compression tones that is four times wider than that of its siblings, leaving you to rock out without all the messing.
With this range, the pedal is as effective at providing subtle, clean tones as it is at super-extended sustain. You can of course use the pedal to reign in signal peaks and create natural acoustic feedback, and with its low noise it is perfect for placing before a dirty amp or high gain distortion pedal. Also, having been set to the sweet spot you are less likely to miss the Treble and Blend controls of the Tone, whilst gaining ease of use.
Of course, the Pigtronix Philosophers Rock is equipped with true bypass switching. The pedal will run perfectly well on a 9-volt adapter but it ships with an 18-volt adapter, to give extra headroom, output and clarity.
