Pigtronix have a long-standing collaborative partnership with none other than the legend that is Dweezil Zappa, and one of the results of this fruitful arrangement has resulted in the birth of the Pigtronix PXQTM Quantum Time Modulator Guitar Effects Pedal. The all-analogue beauty that is the Quantum Time Modulator delivers double bucket-brigade time stretching with dual modulation sources - we know, incredible. The only thing that can hold you back when it comes to creating mind-warping tones with this pedal is your own imagination, so let is loose and get creative because, if anything, you and the QTM deserve it.
Pigtronix know how a thing or two about taking incredibly complex circuitry and reducing it to its very core controls, designing simplistic interfaces that belie the power hidden within. At your disposal are three control knobs: Sensitivity, Source, and Speed, as well as a Vibe toggle switch.
The Sensitivity pot controls how hard your playing dynamics have to be - how hard you hit a string - in order to initiate a modulation voltage from the internal envelope circuit. Depending on how high your gain is, how hard you play, or how much modulation you want to inject into your signal, depends on how you attenuate this control. Obviously, higher settings are required for low output pickups, or when you really want to kick in some modulation. The beauty is that the envelope responds to your picking style, producing a delightfully musical and more natural response.
The Speed knob dictates the rate of the LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator) modulation. Slower settings results in a more 'spacey' sound, whilst faster speed produces a much more vibrato-like effect.
The Source know determines which of the modulation sources (LFO or ENVELOPE) is active - turned fully counter-clockwise (pointing towards the Sensitivity pot) the Envelope is the modulation source; turned fully clockwise and the LFO is in operation. Between the two extremes you'll find your own sweet spot that is perfectly tailored to your tonal desires.
The Vibe switch toggles between Chorus and Vibrato, which allows you to choose between clean and modulated, or a purely modulated signal with plenty of character.
The QTM can be used as a Mono pedal, or a Stereo output can be employed by using a TRS cable - in stereo you are guaranteed much greater effect with regards to modulation. Alternatively, you could follow in Dweezil Zappa's footsteps and use a third option - run the Quantum in mono, on one side of a two amp, stereo set-up to creating a dramatic 3-D effect.
The Pigtronix PXQTM Quantum Time Modulator Guitar Effects Pedal is built for touring professionals, and priced for everyone to take advantage of what it has to offer. The chassis is absolutely solid, and its easy to see why seasoned pros such as Zappa employ one in their rig.
