The Rode NTR Active Ribbon Microphone is an elegantly understated mic that produces breath-taking results. The simplistic yet cool heavy matte black finish belies the meticulous craftsmanship that has gone into building the NTR, a model that is lovingly designed, manufactured and shipped from Rode's very own Australian factory.
The bi-directional "figure of eight" polar pattern is perfect for capturing acoustic instruments with peerless precision, such as: vocals, piano, strings, and woodwind. The figure of eight pattern rejects sound sources from the sides of the mic, and focuses attention of the source directly in front of it, whilst allowing some of the ambient sound to be captured at the rear of the microphone for as faithful a reproduction of your instrument as one could hope for.
Unique Ribbon Element Design
Rode has proven themselves to be experts at designing and building high-end microphones at affordable prices, and the NTR is no exception to this rule. The unique design of the microphone means that the intricately crafted, laser cut aluminium ribbon - which is a mere 1.8 microns thick -is isolated from the microphone housing. Rode's innovative approach to creating the ribbon element guarantees exceptional accuracy across each and every model.
The ribbon element is surrounded by a chemically etched all-metal layer of mesh, which guarantees rigidity and stability whilst retaining an exceedingly low density. Not only does this ensure protection for the element, but it does so without impeding its ability to resonate and capture audio with the utmost transparency. The internal shock mounting is so effective that an external shock mount is not required.
Paired with the ribbon element is a high output, super-low noise, low-impedance transformer, which guarantees maximum fidelity between the NTR's ribbon motor and electronics. The active electronic circuitry within the NTR means that this microphone can be used with a wide range of preamps, without having to ramp up the gain, making it a highly versatile, reliable and consistent recording partner.
The top of the body features a travel screw, which secures the ribbon element and shock mount in place when the microphone is not in use. The solid frame around the ribbon capsule is position with the rejection zone of the microphone's bi-directional polar pattern, eliminating the possibility of interference when capturing recordings. As with all Rode microphones, you can rest assured that the durability of the casing is as solid as possible, protecting the sensitive internal components - especially the ribbon - from unwanted damage.
The Rode NTR Active Ribbon Microphone is a dream come true, boasting a frequency response of 20Hz to 20kHz, an impressive maximum SPL of 130dB at 1kHz, and is delightfully lightweight. Each model is supplied with a ring-mount microphone stand, as well as a premium drawstring dust cover for protection. Whether you’re a professional or an amateur, every wants the best at an affordable price, and the NTR deserves to take pride of place in everyone’s studio.
