Samson doesn’t do anything by halves and have built an outstanding reputation based on constructing road-ready equipment that both amateurs and professionals can rely on. Their CO3 multi-pattern condenser microphone is an excellent, entry-level mic that puts a huge amount of recording power and versatility into your hands. Home studio enthusiasts, or those looking for a lightweight and reliable mic to take on the road will appreciate the discreet yet rugged build quality possessed by this little gem.
Inside the capsule is a dual-diaphragm design that allows you to switch between three polar patterns: Supercardioid, Omni and Figure-of-eight. The consistency of quality between each pattern is remarkable considering the price point of this mic. The supercardioid setting is fantastic when used for recording vocals and acoustic instruments, where you wish to focus quite specifically on a sound source whilst retaining depth and presence. The omni setting is great for recording room ambience, distance miking an instrument to capture a mix of the instrument’s timbre and the room’s character. The figure-of-eight pattern is great for beefing out the low-end response whilst still capturing all the richness and texture of a cardioid pattern.
Thanks to the impressive sound pressure level (SPL) handling abilities of the CO3, this microphone is great for recording close to sound sources without problems. Not only that but Samson have very helpfully included a –10dB pad/attenuation switch along the front panel, so if you’re miking drums or simply wish to counter a high energy sound source, all you have to do is flick a switch.
Furthering the versatility and power of this microphone, Samson have implemented a low/high frequency cut off control If you wish to remove low-end rumble and high-end clarity to get a more focused sound.
For musicians on a budget, the Samson CO3 is an excellent multi-pattern condenser that is easy to use, only requires 48V phantom power to get going, plugs in via a standard XLR socket and has many features normally seen on a microphone double its price. Not only that but Samson have also included a carry case to protect the CO3 on the move and a swivel mount that will work with any microphone stand.
